Upon watching UFC 24 I learned The Beast ref’d a match with Shonie Carter vs Brad Gumm. In my two decades of being a mma die hard, I had no idea.

I’m ironically reading “The Realest Guy In The Room”, Severn’s biography. And he never mentioned it in that timeline.

Anyone know of any other matches he’s officiated? Or was this a one night stand?

Struck me as odd, can’t recall any other legend doing that job.

It's like trainin' UFC, it's not somethin' you brag about, brah. ;)

But it is always nice seeing legendary fighters take on the role of referee. Vitor "Shaolin" is a good one, too! If legends did more reffing and judging, our sport would be a lot better.

The problem with former fighters being referees or judges is that there is bound to be some bias occasionally. Fighters are human and are just as fallible as the rest of us. Eventually they'll be involved with a fighter(s) that they either trained with, attended the same school as or even fought previously. When there is money on the line, you can't have that type of liability hanging over a sport. Every result would be subject to question.
