Didn't Leslie Benzies leave a few years ago? I thought Benzies was involved heavily in the writing. Hmm. That sucks, but it seems like Rockstar is fine pivoting towards a heavy online focus, and have been since GTAO, since the money trucks haven't stopped.
Good, maybe they can get back to making interesting games again.
As a Rockstar fan since gta2, this is devastating news.
The series problems haven't been the writing typically, though. I didn't like the pacing or development of V's story at all. Each character needed perhaps 1/3 more missions alone in my view to flesh themselves out in their respective worlds.
But the mission design is where they reaaaally need to change, and that wasn't what he seems to have been doing. If he's the guy writing and this is in some way his ethos running through these games, it's a huge blow in the front seat of a Banshee.
If he was the guy who said, make them search every drawer. Then good fuck em
Benzies wrote the "Hurry up Arthur, what are you doing?!?!" dialogue.
Beginning of the end.
Beginning of the end was when they decided to neglect their playerbase by not making GTAV dlc that was badly needed, choosing to whore out their online mode to the grind.
The thing is....the GTA IV story packs didn't sell all that well iirc.
You're spoiled. Only one game out of the entire series has ever had DLC.
Wait, isn't the online community their player base as well?
Single Player DLC would've been a nice bonus, but given the size of the base game, it's really not necessary.
Eh if he was lead writer of GTA V I don't care. I hated the GTAV story line. 4 had a much better story.
GTA 5 was pretty epic for me with the 3 different story missions, loved Trevor.
RDR2 was one of the biggest let downs for me in recent memory. Was like a chore to finish it. ,stopped playing, reinstalled it just to finish it because people said for the epilogue. Besides that it was underwhelming even Uncharted 4 was more fun for me.
So where is he going?
He's been one of the lead writers for every major Rockstar game since 1999.. (entire GTA series, Red Dead, Bully etc)..
Yet to be confirmed..
Maybe taking some time out before the bidding war between Microsoft and Sony commences..
Oh your right I just checked and he was one of the lead writers.
Microsoft would be wise to snap him up, definitely.
They make pretty cool and detailed worlds, probably even the best in their genres, but their "gameplay loop" have been feeling pretty shallow this past decade.
RDR2 was plagued with poor design decisions that made it even more tedious than their other titles.
