I sparred with this real big guy. He probably had at least 50lbs on me and was like 8 inches taller. He is strong. And he uses it.

But anyway, this dude neck cranked my from my guard. Twice. I didn't tap to it because it didn't hurt that much (who taps to it anyway?). It did open my guard but he didn't pass and tried to keep cranking me. He eventually gave up and I got closed guard again.

While I was sparring I didn't feel any pain but i felt it while I was going home. Its not as bad as the anaconda I got caught in a few weeks ago but it does still hurt.

Is there any prevention techniques/counters for this neck crank?

The can opener?

I just open my guard, scoot out and sit up. You can go to buttterfly guard.

I'd tap to a neck crank if I had to. I'd probably crank the guy back afterwards though.

No-one really uses it in my club. As for prevention, armbar him before he can get both hands on your neck I guess.

if i know a guy likes to use the canopener, which even this one purple belt does where i train, i'll try to maintain wrist control/overhook or something else to keep control of one arm...he can't do it with one arm. also, keeping a "frame" across their neck/collarbone helps keep him too far away to get a powerful grip.

I didn't tap to a gi choke which was more of a gi crank a month and a half ago and I regretted it for three weeks after. Chokes are one thing to tough it out but I wouldn't mess around with a crank.

Lately ive been playing around with a real high guard, knees by their armpits and so forth, but in doing so, if someone pulls a canopener on me, i cant open guard/scoot out since they easily stack me on my upper back/shoulderblades, forcing me to tap. Anyone got any tips for those kinds of situations?
