Smart for height and reach, but nobody mixes it up quite like Bones.

DC is just wasting his time training. Might as well just eat popeyes and the results will still be the same...an ass whooping by jon jones.

    Verhoeven is a beast.

Smart move by DC. Probably realized he can't beat Jones in grappling, he needs to win kickboxing match with Jones.

Verhoeven is a beast and he is 6'5 with huge reach ( around 210cm / 83 in ) so he is a very good candidate to emulate Jones's striking ..

But what DC needs is a HW/SHW wrestler who is at least 6'3 with good reach to emulate the specificities of Jones's wrestling and his uncommon leverages in the clinch/against the cage which he seemed to have no answer for during the 1st fight...

That definitely was a problem for him in the first fight.

Height and reach wise a good idea even if I'm not sure about the reach. But you can't really emulate jones

Training with Vanillareem will help him, but like many already pointed out, the striking wasn't his biggest problem in the fight, he'd need to have a tall wresttler with long limbs in his camp.
