critique my match

When I read your intro before watching the match I was expecting 2 guys rolling not knowing much of what they were doing but I gotta tell you I was impressed.

Very nice sweep, and the first sweep attempt wasn't bad either.

Keep training, you're doing very well

Not too shabby for less than a year of training. Things that stand out... You are aggressive, but I feel like there's a waste of energy. Also you are going halfway with a lot of things. Like the sweeps you were working a few times you only went halfway, with the armlock you were trying you were only going halfway (not the last one, that one was nice). A lot of that is attributed to lack of hip movement. You kept a closed guard for most of the match, which is hard to attack from in no gi, especially when you aren't shifting your hips around or trying to really create something. Another thing that gets me is the mount. There was already a thread about how to hold a mount, you were grapevining the legs, which a lot of guys like to do and such, but to me it's a waste of time. You can have just as much control and put your opponent in danger by working towards a higher mount and threatening his arms. A low mount with grapevines, is a very passive mount, you can't much work anything from there.

I'm probably being a bit hard on you, but honestly you did a really good job. Excellent sweep there, then great transition from the back to the armbar. Keep training hard and you'll only get better.

very slick. good agressiveness man. how are ur take downs coming along. I wud like to hear where ur strong and where u think u need work, im new to grappling too so i like to hear grapplers talk about their game

Hayliks pretty much said it all, hipmovement

Great match. I have not been training that long either however I agree with not being active from the guard. You were flat most of the time. If you noticed, you had control of his arms several different times but were out of position to do anything about it. Keep those hips moving. Trust me, I am a big guy and I hear that everyday at class so I think it is finally sinking in. I might be wrong, but your mount was pretty good but your arms seemed to be out of place. It looked like if he knew the umpa a little better he could have swept you. Your arms were straight and close to your body and not based out protecting them.

not bad, I think everyone covered what I was gonna say as far as advice, but I was wondering how much did each of you weigh?

thanks for the comments guys. I hear you on the hip movement comments. Typically I do not grapvine legs when in mount, only when i think he is gonna try to upa do i really try and grapevine. When he traps a certain arm i try to grapevine his opposite leg so he cannot get any power for an upa/bridge. My takedowns are the absolute weakest part of my game, i have no trouble admitting that. I am very comfortable on my back and dont mind being there, but I do need to start working takedowns more and trying to be on top more. I weigh 156lbs and i think my opponent was around 145 or 150 he said, I forget.

Hayliks I forget to address a fwe more of your points. I think you are right about being too aggressive. Prior to this I had only done 1 tournament, so I think I still have to overcome that nervousness and shit. Also I think the reason a lot of my sweeps/subs/etc were done halfway comes from being nervous and not completing the technique fully. Kinda hard to explain what I mean...

The nervousness will ALWAYS be there. I've been in a TON of tournaments hundreds of grappling matches, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't still get nervous. It's how you let it affect that really matters. Your mind is telling you to be safe and not go for things, and in the end it can hurt you more than keep you safe. When you do a technique, you should commit to it fully, or else how can you expect it to work? You can't try a sweep halfway and then decide whether or not it's working (yeah there are a few case where you can, but you're not REALLY going halfway, they're just defending which usually opens them up for another kind of sweep). There is such a big mental aspect of competing that is rarely touched on, a lot of people will give you bad advice about it here, I've given up trying to argue with these guys on the topic... You have guys who've been to 2 tournaments telling you how to use your aggressiveness or whatever, and the advice is just garbage.

Not bad. You looked like you were panicing a little in the beginning and wasting energy but you calmed down after that and did much better. When you have someone in your guard and they grab the back of your head like that kid did, arm bar the shit out of them.

Nice sweep. I also liked the armbar from the back. I love going for that when people turn over. Good stuff man, keep it up!

off the start you should have grip fight for wrist control, instead of going 50-50 with him, good aggression and spotting (attempted sweeps, posture breaking, and tie up with his arms), good sweep to mount but your attack stopped... you did keep nice body control

you his hips to give the angle instead of floor. try to keep yourself from being flat on your back.

over all not bad

I thought you did very good..solid match and keep training!

I thought you did good for not training very long. The only things I see are wasted energy, lack of hip movement due to your guard being closed and being too aggressive in the beginning. keep training.
