Not sure how to embed - sorry! :(

I've been training MMA for around 4 years on and off now.
Does this reflect in my bag workout, this is just a quick clip of my third round on the bag, what do you think?

I'm looking for pointers and i'll make videos like this in future, what am I doing wrong/what could I do better and what's going to get me beat in sparring/competition?

Please, mind the kicks - it's kinda hard to pull the foot back in tight ankle wrapped boxing shoes but my garage floor isn't the kindest surface.

Thanks.

You look like you are probably fast and accurate when you spar.

You also look really vulnerable when you throw repeat body shots. Your hand stays down, shoulder stays down, chin stays up, waiting to get tapped.

Can I guess that you destroy n00bs but have a hard time finding good regular competition?

  • Less shitty EDM
  • Relaxed shoulders
  • More hip rotation
  • Better footwork

You're an arm-puncher

Summerstriker - Thanks very much for your comments. You are right I deal with lower grades pretty easily but when training at a different club i'm not all there. I need more variety in my training as I've been training with the same group for a long long time.

Daspeeit - Thanks. EDM noted, just wanted a little music so it was less boring. You say better footwork, can you please elaborate?

Spidercrawl - Fair comment but what would you say if the titles weren't there? Can you be more constructive?

AnarchyCamp - Never really cared much for fashion when hitting a bag..

Put your hips into your punches more, work on the motion of moving the hips and make sure it's not your arm swinging first with your hips trailing behind as an afterthought, you'll get off balance like you did a couple of times in that video.

nailed it
you need to spend more time working on striking you look like all your training has been in group classes at a low level mma gym

you dont look like a guy who have been training for 4 years. your dont got any balance. and your kicks are horrible.

Thank you again for the assertive comments.

I'll definitely try to work the hips more, I know exactly what you're all saying.

I've watched the video back a few times now and can see it so clearly - although it's strange, when hitting the bag I thought I was pivoting off the foot and putting my hips in.

Wow Exuberant - That's actually a great help, thinking of putting my hips in and pivotting before I throw is a way i've never been taught before - only ever been taught to throw and pivot at the same time which does make me lack quite significantly - there's times in the video where I don't pivot at all.

I'll work on it and post another video when I get chance.

Just never put shitty EDM to your videos again pls

Its amazing how much you learn from watching yourself. Your making alot of the mistakes I was before posting my bagwork. Not enough hip rotation and body shots leaving you open.

Also, not sure if the way you are punching is right. Your straights sort of come out to the side, like a hook almost. In boxing they should come down the middle more (you can use side ones, I like them for if someone covers up so you can go around the guard) but you should at least throw some straight ones. Then again, maybe thats how people punch in MMA?

Nope, that's just poor lazy technique on my behalf. :icon_lol:

It's actually alot easier to hit someone throwing a proper straight in MMA as the gloves are alot smaller and you can't just mickey mouse cover and peep through your gloves like boxing! The punch will still come through. Not sure why they're coming out to the side like that to be honest - thanks for pointing that out dude.

I'll try to work on that, it's probably because i'm not rotating my hips and i'm reaching rather than letting my hips carry the punch out straight.

In the time that i've trained I've NEVER watched myself. It's weird, I can watch it back and instinctively see all the things that are wrong. I like it, but it's reminded me I have SO much to learn when striking, it's a bloody minefield.

i know exactly how you feel...i just recorded myself sparring for the first time in almost 3 years last week. never saw footage of myself ever...you can easily see a lot of what you need to work on when you watch footage of yourself.

To be honest, it's something that I wish i'd done earlier.
I have a lot of habits and these are going to be harder to iron out now that they are set in stone.

I'd recommend it to any martial artist, it's a humbling experience.

I've dated my video too so I can go back and actually evidence what I've improved on.

It might be you are too close to the bag so you cant get full extension? Its something I did so that i didnt overextend my elbows if the bag moved

Possibly, my garage isn't huge and it's very difficult when going around to the left hand side as my back is pretty close to the wall, it's like being cornered. I did try to throw a few crosses from that side but you can see where they got stopped dead because i'm not strong enough to keep the punch through. (Albeit this could be 'cause i'm not rotating my hips enough)

Things to work on in my next video currently ;
Throw straight crosses
Relax shoulders
More body rotation
Less dance music
Throw proper form round kicks

Lol at the less shitty EDM haha. As a college kid I've grown to love EDM, but more so conventional house and dubstep lol. Was that trance? Never really heard that style before.

Also is it me or would that garage not be able to fit a car? Maybe I'm just too high/delusional right now, I pulled an all nighter studying for a final lol.

In regards to the video, only thing I got to add to the other comments is your body jab looked a little funky, like you just kinda stayed static and jabbed at a 45 degree angle. Should try to bend your knees when you go to the body, but make sure you don't lean forward. What personally helps me is having a set combination list in my head that I wanna use/practice, I find myself focusing on the technique better that way. Also, unless you're working conditioning, taking your time in between combos/strikes helps.

I'm no expert though, just my 2 cents.
