Hey all, just thought I'd impart a little quick knowledge for those who may have some issues with your credit report (US):
Get your free report from all 3 bureaus at annualcreditreport.com; then, go through your report from each agency, and dispute each negative item (online) by choosing "this item is not mine" (even if it is yours). The credit reporting agency then, by law, has to contact the creditor listed; the creditor then has 30 days to confirm it's your account. If they don't within 30 days, by law the credit agency HAS to take that item off your credit report (with their agency only of course).
This doesn't cost you a penny, and most people get half of their negative items taken off because the debt is old, too small, etc., with these initial "challenges". If you want to clean up your credit totally, you can typically pay 50 cents on the dollar to satisfy them.
This is what the "credit repair" people charge you a bundle for.
