A woman who visited a fishmonger was shocked to discover the gills of the crucian carp she bought were still moving - after nearly 48 hours on ice.

Knowing the fish had so far defied the odds of survival, the woman and her partner sprang into action and ran a bath of water which is where the carp would live for the next two weeks.

Cindy Lao from Cheltenham was in London for Chinese New Year with her friends.

On her last day away, she visited a fishmonger and bought several sea bass and Crucian carp, which are believed to have come from the wholesalers that morning.

When Cindy arrived home, she stored the fish in the fridge and the next day she began to prepare it for dinner.

But, soon after she called her partner Paul Lewis-Borman to the kitchen as she could not believe what she was seeing - one of the fish seemed to still be alive.

Paul said: “She called me down as she had thought she had seen the Crucian carp’s gills moving and asked me what I thought. They certainly were.

“I was in two minds of whether to put the poor thing out of its misery but Cindy said ‘no, it is a miracle he is still alive’. So we got a bowl of water to put him in.”

For a while, the fish seemed to be struggling, however, he slowly showed more signs of life.

Paul said: “The carp was listless for a while, but after 20 minutes those gills were certainly going.

It's possible that the carp she saved is the Hitler of the fish world, and that she just doomed humanity when the marine life takes over.

The Simpsons predicted this

I wonder if the fish got brain damage from this or something. Maybe killing it was a better idea.

RIP Getting fresh fish in that area now.

like a sex pet ? they fucked the fish in some kind of weird orgy or something ? i dont get it

You see those videos of how the Chinese manage to cook and eat a fish while its alive? Crazy shit.

The freezing and living again stuff is normal.

I thought the fishmonger guts the fish and cleans the scales for you?

That's the part that don't make sense to me.
Why would it not be cleaned?

Seems like bullshit to me sir.

My mother would always got her fish whole. She preferred to do it herself. Especially if she found roe. If she went to a place run by Asians, they tend to have tanks with live fish.

I doubt it.
Carp are one of the most adaptable fish on the planet, that’s why they’re highly invasive. Carp can survive in very cold and low level oxygen environments.
I’m going to guess Crucian carp have glycoprotein. Glycoprotein is found in the cell walls and prevents the walls from being damaged when frozen. It’s like an antifreeze.
The temperature change from the bath water and chlorine in the water probably did more harm.
Fun fact, there’s an Alaskan Blackfish that get completely frozen every year.

Just make sure not to buy those live fish for sushi.
If you look at those tanks, the water quality is often very poor and the tanks are severely over crowded. That’s a breeding ground for parasites. Cooking the fish will kill most of those parasites.

They probably fucked it up worse by sticking it in bath water.

Hey man, I'm all for respecting life and stuff, but if my fish is still moving after I get it out of the fridge, I'd probably be like "Whoa. Crazy shit." and then proceed to chop its head off and eat it.

There definitely wouldn't have been an article written about it. Like really.. You're really going to try to keep it by sticking in your bathtub?

And also, now what the fuck are we doing for dinner then?
