I got a full armbar locked on me for a split second, but now my elbow hurts like shit. I can straighten my arm back and forth but it takes a good 5 seconds. The pain is not unbearable, but I can't really do anything with my arm.

What should I do, should I get it checked out?

If you have medical insurance you should obviously get it looked at...if not, its probably just a bad hyper extension, in which case you need to go buy a brace or wrap at any local sporting good store, and not lift/train or use it for at least 2 weeks...same thing happened to me, I was back after a little more then 3 weeks, at almost full strength. Seriously though, i can't stress this enough, DON'T F-CKING train on it, let it rest, otherwise you'll exasperate the injury 10 fold.

next time just remember that you don't always have to tap, just say stop if you don't have time to tap.

Good advice. Scream in pain, say "tap", "get off me", "you win let go", "uncle", or you can alwasy be a retard and let someone hyperextend your arm.

OP: Really though you sould know when your beat, if someone has you dead to rights in a sub, but your still squirming around trying to escape don't make a training partner pop your arm, just tap, or scream stop. Now a choke is a completely different story, if you tap to a choke (in a tournament, or some other uber-important situation, like say for super cool t-shirt your instructor brought back from brazil) you're just a pussy. But in training tap early and often.

Ice your arm rest, if it still is fucked up GO SEE A DOCTOR. Only you know what is normal with your body, if YOU think it is fucked GO SEE A DOCTOR.

What the fuck do us jerkoffs on the internet know???? GO SEE A DOCTOR.

The one thing you NEED TO DO, is be SURE not to re-aggravate it.

Once you do go back to training, make sure you don't let anyone near an armbar on that arm or it'll be back to square one. I seemed to re-injure my arm every 2 weeks. Healing took an eternity.

LOL, yea, be like Marlon Sims, and don't tap...read that again "BE LIKE MARLON SIMS"...yea, I wouldn't want to be that stupid either. I think you look like more of a pussy/douche if you don't tap and everyone sees that someone made them their bitch because you're out like an f-ing light for the world to point and laugh at. Point being, its stupid not to tap regardless of the situation (street excluded), and not doing so doesn't increase your macho-ness

doctors are clueless, go soak your arm in HOT water, and then immediately ice it for 20min, and then back to HOT water, pain should subside in a day

YES!!! Get it check out for serious damage.

But, don't depend on the doctor to be 100% right unless the doctor himself is a submission grappler who has been through what you are doing. If you are going to take advice here, make sure the person has been in the same situation as you.

Don't go to a doctor. A waste of money and time. This is going to happen again. I can assure you.

Mind you, this is coming from someone who works in a hospital. Don't waste your co-pay. You may want to take a few days off. Definitely ice it. Ibuprofen if you have some swelling. An elbow sleeve or ace bandage if you feel like training. The human body is a wonderful thing.

Basically, just suck it up. :)

Thanks for the replies, to let everybody know, I wasn't trying to be a hardass or anything. It was during a tournament, the guy it is so fast and with such intensity, I tapped as soon as I could, but i still got fucked up

No need to explain. It happens. Good on you for getting out there.

Now, ice that bitch!

Don't put it in a sling or brace unless you know what your doing, that can make it worse. Ice it and take tylenol.. you can do hot and cold if ice alone dosen't work. Take it easy for a few days, if no progress go to a sports physican! I always say "tap. tap. tap." if it's one where your hand can't hit the mat fast enough =/ or if i'm rolling with someone thats a prick.

My point is that if you tap you lose if you pass out you lose, WHY on earth would you waste time tapping when you can fight the choke till the end (we are only talking about chokes, not tapping to a joint lock is retarded.)

Many, Many times I have thought about the tap then thought well If I pass out I'll lose anyway, might as well fight it. And Guess what the guy decided to re-adjust or thought it was not tight and tried a transition. Viola escape and no tap. :icon_chee

If you're afraid of being laughed at You need to grow up and get over yourself.

This is from someone who actually practices. If it is not better within a couple of weeks go to your physician. And whatever you do DO NOT practice with a hyper-extened limb.

Suck it up, a split second? You're a woman.

Lol thanks.

Ok it was my first tournament and I'm relatively new to bjj and have never done sports before. I was just a bit worried but I realize that it is not too big a deal.

It already feels much better, I think I will be fine after a few days. After it feels 100%, I'm gonna give it a day or two, I'll start training again, better to miss a few days rather then fuck it up more

I wish i read this about a month ago. I had a very strong pain in my left arm about a month ago. It went in a line from under my arm (near my armpit) down to my elbow and ending at my wrist. I had the pain for like three weeks.

I didn't know what it was but i kept training, figured it would go away. Sometimes, after practice it hurt a lot and sometimes it was just very light. I figured it would go away. It did eventually but this last weekend i competed in a BJJ competition. I lost by armbar. I remember thinking that i should have held on a little longer to see if i could escape. But about 15 mins after my match, my arm started with that same pain i felt the month before. It was throbbing and i discovered what the hell it was and was glad i tapped when i did because it was starting to hurt a lot. I've only been doing BJJ since December so i was new to that kinda of pain.

I didn't see a doctor but i iced it a couple of times and kept my arm bent all weekend as if i had it in a sling.

I hurt my arm too. But it only hurts when I put pressure on my elbow. I have also lost a bit of mobility on the arm. When I do the "bicep pose" I cant get the arm to get closer than 90 degrees. I have a comp in three weeks and I
