Simple question, but perhaps not such a simple answer..?

One would imagine his team would’ve studied this fight in preparing for the matchup but then again...perhaps they focused more on sharpening up the Anti-snap Jitsu.

Was trying to find some gifs of Beneil’s shots on Ferg’ and saw this randomly, certainly apples and oranges when comparing Edson and Tony’s explosiveness but he makes it look so obvious.

Apologies if this has been discussed, haven’t been too active in the forums lately.

Yay? Nay? Eh? C’est Vrais? Porque?

Now if we had a video to see if Dariush also used Jab - takedown against Tony...
    Still coulda woulda though.

    But a good find, props

I'm sure by the 3rd round Tony would've thought to use anything he could've to finish the fight at that point. I think if anything he might've wanted to beat Dariush on the ground.

    Probably not.
His decline was very unfortunate considering that during his prime he was literally unbeatable.

Somebody tell Elcucuy to stop relying on his 10p BJJ. BJJ has been figured out already by most fighters 10 years ago.

It was figured out by better BJJ.

Tony doesn't do jumping knees. He wouldn't have the timing, precision, and explosiveness to pull it off like Barboza did.

Better striking defense/boxing could have saved him. His prime was fuelled by a granite chin that was always going to go. I remember him getting hit with some absolute bombs against RDA and he just ate them. Maybe if he parried some of those shots instead of just eating them like a zombie.

Dude the amount of athleticism, speed, precision, reaction time and drilling it takes to pull of a knee like that is unexplainable. Tony has very little of those things. That's not what made him so good.

Nothing could've saved Tony anyways because Beneil was always a bad matchup for Tony. I remember when Beneil dominated CDF at UFC 177 six years ago, the same card where Tony fought Castillo and thinking Beneil would beat Tony if they ever fought.

Tony just seems mental shot, whenever dauirish threw anything tony was backing up and threw nothing of his own in return. Its sad a guy who could dish out tons of violence now seems afraid to engage

Maybe, just maybe, Beneil learned from that loss and improved.

10P BJJ is the world class no doubt, It's just he relies on it too much, Gotta use boxing scrams, brawls, wrestling AND BJJ in your toolbox

I think five years ago that’s exactly the kind of thing Tony would have done. Not studied film and planned it, and not a fast twitch flying knee, but he would have sensed the pattern and nailed something funky in real time.

He’s lost it though. All he could do against BD was react and avoid. You could see him realizing he needed to do more than just dodge and he would start trying to load up counters, but he simply couldn’t pull the trigger with any sort of speed or timing.

Reflexes look shot to me, along with any explosiveness.

Probably not. Tony seems to have lost a massive chunk of his athletic ability.

I know Rogan and Bravo have hyped 10th Planet, but have they produced any one that's had success in the UFC? I can't think of anyone except Tony and Gastelum.

I just don’t think he can get his body to do it. Whether it’s physical, mental, or the interplay between nervous system and muscles, he just can’t don’t anything with the speed, power and fluidity that you need to do things to win a high level MMA match.

I remember the first time I played basketball many years after I’d stopped playing in high school. It felt like I was drunk. I couldn’t get my body to take any of the actions my brain expected it to take.

That’s what he looked like out there to me. Not nearly as bad as a random guy playing pickup basketball, but for the level he’s trying to compete at he might as well be.
