Where the 14 Americans who tested positive for coronavirus in Japan are now

From CNN Health's John Bonifield

Fourteen Americans who tested positive for novel coronavirus in Japan returned to the United States aboard two state department-chartered flights earlier this week. They flew with more than 300 people who had not been diagnosed with the disease.

These 14 infected travelers, who had been vacationing onboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, are now being monitored and cared for at three medical facilities in the US, according to a spokesperson for the US Department of Health and Human Services.

  • Nine of the positive patients are at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
  • Four are at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington.
  • One patient is in a Sacramento-area hospital in California.

President Donald Trump became enraged with senior advisers this week when 14 Americans who tested positive for the coronavirus were brought back to the US from Japan after he had been told they would remain quarantined overseas, administration officials told The Washington Post.

The President was first told that Americans who were aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, where the coronavirus has spread, would be flown back to the US on two planes but that patients with the infection or with symptoms would stay in Japan, where the ship is anchored, the newspaper reported.

However, the State Department and a US health official decided to bring back the infected Americans on the planes and place them in isolation without telling the President, the Post said.

Administration officials told the Post that Trump learned of the reversal only after the fact and complained that the decision might damage his administration's handling of the outbreak.

I'm digging Vietnam style tunnels right now in my back yard.

While worried about it I am not the level scared yet lol. If shit hits the fan I got a cabin 20 miles from the closest person with solar panels , wood stove and a spring fed well. Wont be living in luxury but also not dying in our own phlegm/mucus.

Tokyo Summer Olympics to be held as planned despite Coronavirus
Feb 21, 2020 | KYODO NEWS

Japan will make preparations to host the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics this summer as planned, the top government spokesman said Friday, though prospects for containment of the new coronavirus remain elusive.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the International Olympic Committee has "confidence" in Japan's response to the virus.

"We will coordinate closely with the IOC, the organizing committee and the Tokyo metropolitan government, and move ahead with preparations to make sure athletes and spectators can feel safe and secure throughout the games," Suga said at a press conference.

The Olympics will run from July 24 to Aug. 9, followed by the Paralympics from Aug. 25 to Sept. 6.

A gradual rise in infections in Japan has tested the government's ability to prevent the spread of the virus in mass gatherings such as the Summer Games.

More than 700 people have tested positive for the virus in Japan, the most outside China, but 634 cases were found on the Diamond Princess, a quarantined cruise ship docked at Yokohama near Tokyo.

A number of events across Japan have been impacted by the outbreak. On Friday, the Liberal Democratic Party, headed by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, decided to postpone its convention scheduled for March 8 at a Tokyo hotel, which was to be attended by about 3,000 LDP members.

On March 1, the annual Tokyo Marathon will be open only to athletes entered in elite categories, while the Japanese Para-Sports Association has canceled a three-day boccia event scheduled from Feb. 28 in the capital, which would have involved foreign competitors.

Japan's health ministry has asked organizers to "re-examine" the need to hold big events, warning the risk of infection will increase if people are not given adequate personal space at indoor facilities.

Talk of the Olympics seems ambitious in February. They can say what they want but they have no idea how capable they will be of actually making it go ahead or not by summer.

China is bringing in seven cruise ships to house medical workers in Wuhan, state media said on Saturday, at a time when such ships are under scrutiny after hundreds of passengers on the Diamond Princess liner in Japan contracted the coronavirus.

The first of these ships, the Blue Whale, arrived in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, on Friday from Yichang, a nearby city down the Yangtze River.

The ships are expected to provide safe dining and living conditions for medics to keep them refreshed as they fight the epidemic, state media said.

What a great idea....

The California Department of Justice is confirming one of their employees who works at the Broadway Avenue office in Sacramento has been in contact with a family member who was diagnosed with novel coronavirus after a trip to China.

This also comes after Friday's announcement of the first confirmed travel related case of coronavirus in Sacramento County, but it's unclear at this point if the cases are connected.

A DOJ spokeswoman says the unidentified employee had minimal exposure to that infected family member. Department officials also said that the employee has not been "exhibiting symptoms" of the virus, and that the California Public Health Department is working closely with the family on their 14-day self-quarantine. The DOJ also also believes there has been absolutely no risk to the their Sacramento workplace.

However, it was also learned on Friday that the DOJ employee in question may have been in contact with other employees prior to going into quarantine. The department spokesperson would not comment on that allegation.

Wuhan woman with no symptoms infects five relatives with coronavirus: study

(Reuters) - A 20-year-old Chinese woman from Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, traveled 400 miles(675 km) north to Anyang where she infected five relatives, without ever showing signs of infection, Chinese scientists reported on Friday, offering new evidence that the virus can be spread asymptomatically.

  • A 20-year-old woman from Wuhan, China, transmitted the coronavirus to her family members without ever showing any symptoms, a new study found.
  • The woman tested positive for the virus, but her CT scans were clear and she never became physically ill.
  • Five of her family members, however, came down with a fever. Two developed severe pneumonia.
  • The case is evidence that the coronavirus can be transmitted when someone is asymptomatic.

First it was fecal matter, now it may be in the urine, which means in the bloodstream which harms multiple organs, and it can spread asymptomatically (without any signs of infection), and victims can become re-infected, and it has an incubation that could be between 14-28 days. Anyone thinking this is a naturally occurring virus is on crack.

Yup, if any of these findings are true the health issues post illness could be just as bad as the illness itself or worse. Personally to me this was China’s last chance to cut the shit and stop holding the rest of the world hostage with the threat of global killer viruses due to either their disturbing lifestyles and carelessness. They have proven without any doubt that sooner or later they are going to start something that will definitely get out of control and this could be the one. Regardless of the outcome in this one I say it’s time to hold them to account economically and morally. The term made in the USA or Canada sounds good to me from now on ...

They should give them their own individual shipping containers.

Israel releases warning on 9 South Korean tourists who tested positive for coronavirus on returning home

From CNN's Amir Tal and Oren Liebermann

In a strong statement, Israel's health ministry warned that nine South Korean tourists who visited the country recently have tested positive for coronavirus upon returning home.

The ministry called on anyone who may have come into close contact with the tour group for an extended period of time to self-quarantine.

The tourists visited some of the most popular sites in Israel and the West Bank from February 8 to 16, increasing the chance of a large-scale exposure in the region, the ministry said Saturday.

Providing a list of dates and locations, the ministry warned that anyone who came within two meters of the group for more than 15 minutes should self-quarantine for 14 days.

The group visited Masada in southern Israel, the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

The potential for a large-scale exposure appears to be high given the number of tourists who regularly visit these sites and others.

The release of the statement on a Saturday is an indication of how seriously authorities are taking the threat of coronavirus spreading in Israel. Government statements are rarely released on Saturday in Israel since it is the Sabbath.

This comes after Israel announced its first case of the coronavirus on Friday. The victim is an Israeli woman who returned from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan.

She was one of 11 passengers flown back from the Diamond Princess. The other 10 tested negative for the virus. All of the passengers remain quarantined in hospital.

Almost All Patients in South Korean Psychiatric Ward Have Virus

Almost all patients at a psychiatric ward of a South Korean hospital tested positive for the coronavirus, with local reports saying a religious sect with followers who were infected had attended a funeral in the same complex.

South Korea’s two confirmed deaths from the virus were also from the Cheongdo hospital’s mental health division, Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Saturday. Both patients had been moved out of the psychiatric ward for medical treatment before their deaths, Vice Health and Welfare Minister Kim Kang-lip said at a briefing.
