Going down to 205 pounds drained Cormier of his power. He never aspired to fight at light-heavyweight anyway until he let his friendship with Cain Velasquez get in the way of business. Jones was fighting at the weight class the best suits him and Cormier was not.

Allow a rematch where jones and Cormier each are allowed to weigh what they believe is their optimum weight and Cormier would take Jones down and keep him there. Wrestling is Cormier's specialty but there was almost no wrestling in the fight they just had because Cormier didn't have the power to take Jones down and keep him there. The one time Cormier picked Jones up and then dropped him (instead of slamming him down with force because he had so little strength) took just about all the strength he had. In comparison, look how Cormier handled Josh Barnett who is a lot bigger than Jones and has a lot more wrestling skill as well.

Its possible. Cormier was 250lbs in the Bigfoot fight. Hes 36 years old and cutting to 205 definitely drains him. Perhaps not power wise but it showed in his endurance for sure.

Barnett has more wrestling skill than Jones? On what planet? Barnett is a catch wrestler, has a better sub game, but his "wrestling skill" is levels below Jones.

Also TS, do you have any evidence that Jones optimum weight is what he's fighting at now? You know for sure he isn't everything he is now but stronger and with more power at say, 235-240 lbs.? I don't know what he'd be like at that weight, and I have news for you: NEITHER DO YOU. He might be slower and less effective, he might be a flat out wrecking machine, he might be the same thing he is now. We don't know.

This is about the most reasonable take I've heard about the situation, no 2 ways about it Cormier cut's a big chunk of weight, and he's getting up there in age.

That being said, y'all are goddamn crazy if you think Jones is walking at like 220, gonna guess he's a little more like 235-240 in the off season. Do realize that Weidman cut's from 220 to 185 and proportionately that's quite similar to DC's cut

But But according to sherdog DC is a MW. If JJ were to fight at HW he would become a different monster. DC didn't just lose because of his conditioning JJ beat up his body.

Another fine example of mmath I'm sure you've heard this before but it doesn't work that way.

Ok I'll bite and say hypothetically, what if he could? Then what? Are we going to see them at HW?

Everyone on here loves dealing on hypotheticals, "I bet he'd win if he..." Or "it would be a different fight if..."

Quit dreaming, your boy got beaten handily in their current state and that's all that matters

Who cares about playing "who can win if...?" When we just saw it for real?

    Maybe.

    Is it possible?

    Sure.

Is there any way we could know?

    Not really.

    Too many factors.

Meh. DC was slowing down at the end of the Mir fight too. I think he's just not used to being pushed by an athlete in his athletic prime like Jones.

This is all true, but JJ is still in his athletic prime, and Weidman's even younger. Plus, Jon carries a pretty big gut between camps, which makes that 235 number a little deceiving. The first couple of weeks of training/dieting probably sees him much closer to the ~220 he's going to weigh on fight night. Jon even mentioned that he was having to put weight on during this most recent camp (although other factors *sniff, sniff* may have played a role in that...)

Jon would still be bigger just as strong if not stronger with the same toolbox he used on DC @LHW to make him brake & cry at the end of the fight. And what's even worse Jon's in his head...
