Seems like MMA has more southpaw fighters than you see in boxing or K1, and I know some wrestlers do it to put the power leg forward for shots, but would some of yall mind elucidating on the benefits to going goofy in 8-point striking ?

And I wonder if anyone knows how many of them are actually converted ?

thread is in honor of gomi's lead right hook nearly killing tyson griffin.

I believe Rich tought himself to be a southpaw, and I think Rashad tought himself to fight from either stance as well.

Some fighters believe it will give them the advantage in the sense that not all opponents are prepared for or accustomed to fighting left handed fighters. Not to mention it's nice to have your strong hand forward, especially if you're a kick fighter who prefers to stay in kick range, you can use your strong lead hand to keep opponents at bay to set up the body/leg kicks.

I'm certain that Anderson Silva is also a converted southpaw; we can smell our own. One of the things that many potential converted southpaws overlook is defense, and how difficult it can be especially if your coach is not accustomed to teaching southpaws. Southpaws aren't as rare as Rocky makes them seem like, especially at the amateur level, so don't think that being a southpaw will automatically put you at an advantage.

I enjoy it when orthodox guys switch to Southpaw to try
    and confuse you...haha.

I'm left handed but stand orthodox. (Boxing).
Never really thought about the pros and cons to be honest.
I just go with what feels natural.
