In a lengthy interview with Submission Radio, Nelson explained that McGregor's loss to Diaz was due to a tactical issue and not a technical one. According to the welterweight fighter, had McGregor not "punched himself out," he would have likely come out victorious.

However, while hindsight is 20/20, Nelson is keen to look towards the future, where he believes McGregor will compete in the lightweight division.

"Yeah I would have liked to see him stay in lightweight. I think that's the more natural weight for him and I think he would have felt a lot better, you know, felt a lot better before his fights and in the camp and not having to worry about all that major weight cut. So I think it's more natural for him. But you know, it is what it is, he makes the cut and he does it every time and it doesn't seem to affect him much in the fight. But you know me, I'm not a big believer or supporter of this type of stuff, these heavy, big weight cuts. I'd like to see it taken completely out and I'd like to see people just going into the fights in their walking-around weight. You know, people just fighting other people that are the same weight, but they're not cutting the weight. It seems like a dumb situation to me. Because some guy does it then everybody has to do it."

Gunnar vs diaz in a grappling
match would be insane.

Touching of butts prohibited*

Also, respect to gunny for always
fighting at his natural weight.
Dude is being real transparent here

Lmfao.

You know Conor thought he could beat Robbie Lawler because he could hang with nelson in light sparring.

He couldn't get through a top ten LW on a 3 day training camp.

Yeah....No. He remains McMachinist from now on.

Had Conor not punched himself out, he probably wouldn't have landed a few more strikes in the first 7 minutes.

Conor needs to stay at 145. How pathetic his cardio was way worse than someone who had no camp. He needs early ko's against smaller men or he won't do so hot.

yup, Nate survived all of those shots. We can also say that McGregor gave everything he had and still came up short.

I thought he spars with welterweights so it was no biggie.

This is what happens when you train your software without damaging your hardware...you don't train how to damage THEIR hardware.

Best possible assessment of the situation imo.

Except Gunny did put down Thatch who is like a LHW.

Compared to other WWs, Gunnar should probably be fighting a division lighter than he is, so take his opinion on how much weight someone 'should' be cutting with a grain of salt.

I do think McGregor is a LW though.

Conor did punch himself out, thats facts. Would he have won if he paced himself and fought smarter. Probably not

'Touch Butt' is turning into this generations Wasssuuuuuup.

I agree with you TS, Nelson needs to go to 155, he will be better there, his game is very grappling based and its much harder to grapple with heavier guys, the weight plays a big part in grappling. it would also help if he wasnt so asleep in his fights, he is half asleep in there, wake up, get some fire. its good to be calm, but not too calm that you are asleep.

I agree with him, but Gunnar needs to actually cut some weight if he ever hopes to be top 10. It's clear he can't compete with the top guys at 170, Story and Maia completely obliterated him easily.

Both should fight at 155.

Let him fight Edgar. If he wins, then he is done there. If he beats Edgar, he will still have a big chance of being the LW champ. A win against Edgar is huge.

Conor looks gassed to me every fight after 1.

Can't train touch butt and world class cardio at the same time - there is only so many hours in the day.

What he can't come out and say is that the cut to 145 will affect Conor if the fight goes past the second round.

If he loses the 145 title in his next 2-3 fights, he should move up to 155.

He just needs to stop delaying the inevitable and just fight at "his" weight - he had a championship belt at that weight which he never stops banging on about, so just fight there already! It will shut us all up lol.

Taking weight cutting advice from a guy who seriously needs to cut weight but won't might not be the smartest move. McGregor should fight Edgar and if he wins, take some time off to put on some mass and move up permantly to LW. How it's even possible he could gas in 1 round is beyond me but he needs to work a lot on his cardio in the future.

Gunnar is right. Conor should stay at 45/55. 55 and 70 fighter's are often similar sized fighter's but the larger lightweights cut big and it would hamper their chances of taking damage greatly. So if Conor wants big 55ers he'd better make them make that cut so they don't get to enter round 2 all bloodied up ready to submit a fatigued Conor in round 2.

and Diaz cant even win a UFC belt lol some of you idiots even think Nate has a chance of beating Lawler lmao
