I used the search for Conor and Khabib because that's a direct comparison of their world wide popularity - the point of this thread.
When you're using the PPV event number, it is
NOT an accurate way to measure a fighters popularity, because only very few countries have UFC as PPVs. Based on my research, only US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have paid PPVs.
For example, if you do a Google Trends for these UFC events in the UK (where UFC is free), you'll see this:
Using an event number is a good way to gauge potential PPV numbers, but it is not a direct measure of the PPV numbers. Even if let's say that we were to use the event number as the measuring stick, then Google Trends showed that
UFC 253 (Adesanya vs. Costa) did less than UFC 254 (Khabib vs. Gaethje) in the 4 PPV countries:
I guess that's why you decided to use the Conor vs Khabib search instead lol. It's not like one guy retired from MMA or anything right? That wouldn't create a mass search.
The retirement announcement could not have been the cause for the rise in Google Trends for Khabib, because if you look at when Conor announced his retirement on June 6, 2020, there was NO rise in Google Trends:
