It just dawned on me how great a marketing move this is. Think about it- before the opponent change, he was going up to fight the 155 champion, and an absolute beast. It's technically a win-win for Conor, because if he wins- great. If he loses- well, it was a division up against the absolute best- no shame in that. Easy to spin.

With the opponent change however, he goes from the very best at 155 to a top 10 guy with a couple of weeks to prepare. Now it's suddenly gone from a win-win situation to a lose-lose situation- if he wins, everyone expects it anyway. If he somehow loses, he's lost to a guy with no time to prepare who isn't even in the reckoning for a title shot.

What's the solution? Simple, put the fight at 170. Nate isn't a natural WW at all- he's tall, but very rangy. Compared to a similar body type in Condit, Nate is distinctly undersized. So taking the fight at 170 doesn't really give Nate any real advantage- they both just compete without the weight cut. But now, if Conor should lose- he has a fantastic spin opportunity based on the fact he went up 2 whole divisions to save the card. The marketing team can easily talk him up for saving the card on short notice and the fact he only lost to an opponent significantly larger. And not only that, whatever happens, he looks like an absolute warrior for not giving a fuck about weight.

Top marks to Conor or whoever made this scenario, they really covered the bases. Hope the fight lives up to expectations, and really hope Conor does take it- I want that RDA fight to happen!

He is smart for making the fight at 170 lbs and here is why:

If he was to fight anyone at 155lbs other than the champion and lose .. he can kiss his "super-fight" with that champion good bye. He would have to rebuild himself back up and go on a tear of defending his belt at 145lb before he would get anyone interested again. But if he was to lose a fight at 170lbs it does the least damage to him still getting that big super fight and a shot at becoming a two division champion.

RDA still dominated Nate. Nate is 2-2 as Welterweight in UFC

Yes if he loses at 170 no biggie but anyone at 155 super-fight goes bye bye.

I have another reason why they wanted him to fight in 170. They were afraid diaz wont make weight and will have an advantage over connor because connor would suffer from th 155 weight cut and diaz could simply shit on it. The fight would still be on

At this point, I bet Conor controls your motor reflexes with how far back of your throat he is.

Yeah but if McGregor loses he still loses to a guy who had almost no time to prepare and in a fight that also isn't at his current fighting weight class either.

yes but it would be horrible if he lost to that same guy at 155, since Nate was dominated by RDA in very decisive manner just last year.

If he loses to Nate, he loses to a LW and can kiss that super fight good bye. Nate will fight RDA before Conor does. If he lost to a real WW then there would be a some damage control. He loses to Nate, there's no fixing it.

I agree. It is a good experiment.

he didn't take a fight at 170. he took a fight against nate. nate just happened to need the fight at 170. it wasn't for spin. it was to fight nate.

Reactionary behavior is the opposite of genius. Conor is reactionary.
