if you have been following MMA for as long as I have, Conor's 2 years reign on top is nothing extraordinary. Yea, 2 division titles... but he's the only man to be given that shot ever, without even having to defend his existing belt once. That too after getting submitted, and barely edging out a decision in that rematch, against a gatekeeper.

Take nothing from him, he looked great against Aldo and Alvarez.. props to that... but he didn't look that great against 2-weeks Mendes, didn't look great against Nate Diaz... now he looked terrible throwing hammer fists against a pro-boxer before gassing terribly on the biggest stage of his career... despite not even pushing a significant pace for someone who is fighting at 154 pounds, at 30 years old.

But the the thing is, if you've been watching MMA for just 3-4 years, then yea, Conor's a huge deal because he's the biggest part of the better half of your MMA experience. So I get where the worship comes from.

But someone like me? I've seen them come and go. Lesnar too was in HW GOAT talks at one point. Ronda could beat men... etc, just talking about the more recent hype guys.

The greats make believers out of haters... not by screaming, not by insulting... not by showing off with money... not by 'acting'... but simply doing it day-in and day-out for a long period of time.

I hated Anderson Silva for what he did to Rich Franklin, who is one of my favorite fighters of all time. I hated him. I was younger, a bit more emotional, and like some of you folks, I cheered for him to get beat against everyone he fought, for a long, long time.

It wasn't till Abu Dhabi where Dana shat on him publicly, and threatened to put him on the prelims... (after fighting Maia), that I started getting behind Anderson Silva. Now I'm a forever fan. Why? He did it time and time again, till it erased every single doubt I had in my head.. except for being able to get his dick up, unfortunately (lol).

How long can Conor stall for? How many gimmick matches can he get under his belt? How many contenders can he avoid? Yea, young fans are going to defend him night in and night out. Its normal... He got them into the sport. He's the reason they visit sherdog. You can't logically explain things to people in that position. They're holding on to hope...hoping that they know what's going on, and not just being victimized once again by 'marketing', like they were with Ronda's case.

So... to quote a fellow spiritual leader for my favorite assholish phrase from him- "Time takes Time".

Conor has 2 title fight wins (3 including interim). Lets see where he's at when he reaches 6 or 7... then perhaps, breaks GSP's record (12 title fight wins).

So bored of these Conor threads now tbh.

Why can't people meet in the middle? He's certainly not GOAT material but he's 9-1 in the UFC against some very good fighters and his striking is excellent. Sure, he was given some undeserved chances but he made the most of them.

Tl;Dr

Conor might not be as good as everyone says. I know this because I have ufc'd for the longest.

Not a GOAT. But hes a good fighter. Although, tbh, BJ Penn has similar credentials and people consider him a GOAT. But at least bj defended

Don't be scared homie. Conor has done not one exceptional thing in his time with the UFC. He was gifted a path to the spotlight and given opportunities that not one else was afforded. All without ever defending a belt of coming close to clearing out a division.

Yes but win or lose his fights are exciting - I think that's what really makes the difference. To be honest his attitude is pretty good as well. He admitted after losing to Floyd that him gassing is half a mental problem. I think that's key for him to actually keep making gains in his career

I've seen mentions of Nate & Eddie being gatekeepers, which 1) doesn't describe what a gatekeeper is since both of them have been regularly pushed to co-main and main event slots and 2) they've come back from losses against good competition to stay in conversations for big fights for a decade.

But to answer: Conor doesn't have enough meat on that record to be at the top of all-time discussions. Who he is compared to have faced top competition in their respective divisions significantly longer.

He is, however, a top guy in 2 divisions (whether you think he goes 4-0 against the rest of the top 5 or 0-4), and there have been guys like him in the past who chase big fights, like Penn & Couture. They're more in the p4p category, don't care which weight it's at, but the challenge and what comes with it, and also tend to have mixed success because of those risks.

But he's also below those 2 because he hasn't been on top for as long. So at this point he's simply a great fighter who's story isn't told yet, and an icon for Irish MMA. Could end up being a short-time supernova or a lasting p4p great.

as usual..the truth lies somewhere in the middle..

Championships in two weight classes, victories in three, 13 second (T)KO over one of the best MMA fighters ever, a 21-3 record consisting of 19 finishes all within the first two rounds, etc. I bet most fighters wished they were that average.

Nicely said..

Your post loses all credibility when you use Anderson as an example of what potential goats should aspire to, what Conor did without PEDs is infinitely superior to anything the likes of Anderson/Jones achieved on them. You can't be a goat and on PEDs, they are for the mentally weak.
