You got it right, it's for his sport and not for him deciding he wants to be a boxer.
I'd want Conor to win if they were fighting MMA but as they're not I want him to get embarrassed while getting beaten.

If Conor decided he was going to play football (soccer) or rugby for Ireland I'd want him to fail at that too and go do what he does best, MMA.
