They are still sneakers to me, I have been wearing the same kind since the 80's. In fact I still have a couple pairs from the 80's for mowing the lawn and stuff like that. They go right in the washer and dryer now and then. The old ones are much higher quality leather than what they sell now.
I lucked out and bought up 8 pairs on clearance for 25 bucks a pair like 8 years back , now they are back in style again, or at least I have been told, could not care less.
