Conor’s actual skill level is a tough one.

He had a bunch of fights at 145 pounds against strikers and he outstruck them all.

Chad Mendes on short notice. Was taken down at will. Chad gassed. Chad got USADA’d

KO’d Aldo with one punch. No rematch.

Fought Nate Diaz, gassed trying to put him away and got instantly subbed on the ground. Maybe he just wanted out of that fight.

Went life and death war in the Diaz rematch.

Outclassed Alvarez, lost to Mayweather.

The Khabib fight is probably the best study for Conor’s skill level. A fight with a difficult match up in his rightful weight class. He did very well. Better than Poirier and better than Gaethe. He stuffed takedowns, he landed punches standing. He made it to the fourth round but was outmatched.

He also cheated and committed many fouls.

Cowboy fight left us lacking and didn’t teach anything.

I’ve heard some people say Conor is a goat. This is not true. He had a lot of good matchups and the 155 title shot handed to him with no 145 defences.

I’ve heard other people say he has the same skill level as Nate Diaz but with much better opportunities and matchups. I don’t think this is true either.

where do you stand?

He's the best 145er and 155er ever. He will also take the 170 belt with the right matchup. He could take it when Lawler had it.

He came from a 2-year long layoff and still got a round from Khabib after a horrendous camp. Khabib immediately retired despite saying "I will fight the guy who beats Poirier, whether it's Conor or Tony.". Then he said "it has to be 155, not 170, or I will not fight." Then McGregor - Poirier fight was arranged at 155 and he immediately retired.

He ran away like a chicken. He never went up in weight classes, he never fought a wrestler that knows BJJ. He felt Conor in the cage and he immediately realized if that was out-of shape Conor, he would be fucked up against a motivated, trained Conor.

Khabib is the most overrated MMA fighter ever.

Pretty much agree.

Guys like RDA fought everyone. Gold match ups, bad match ups. Guys too big? Better wrestler? So what?

It really does affect your record how you choose your division and fights.

That said, it's clear Conor:s skill level is very, very high.

Elite , but needs to defend to prove it to the world

Skillwise the goat imo, the 205 performance was the most flawless masterpiece ever seen in the octagon but I can understand why people don't consider him the goat due to activity. His lack of activity is the byproduct of being such a global superstar which dragged him into the Mayweather fight which you obviously can't blame him for taking but unfortunately it robbed us of some prime Conor vs Khabib/Tony fights. I think the Conor that fought Eddie beats them both but the Conor that made 100 million and didn't fight for over 2 years and was clearly drinking during the build up was a different story, still good but no way 205 hungry Conor gets caught by an overhand right like Khabib caught him with.

Fortunately he seems to be in a good place again. I wouldn't say the Cowboy fight proves nothing, 40 seconds? Nobody does that to cowboy. Its real shame Covid robbed us of seeing Conor fight 1 or 2 more times in 2020, another byproduct of being too successful to put on crowdless events.

I was thinking about this lately. Very hard to guard. Sometimes I think he’s the real deal. Then I read someone posts about the points TS mentioned. And I think maybe he isn’t that good.

He's elite but a notch below guys who defended their belts. He can be champ but his blatant cardio weakness would make his reign short-lived.

GOAT striker? Maybe. Just in general though, that’s a tough sell. I mean, he got finished by Nate and Khabib.

I agree with you ts. Its hard to gauge conors skill level. Im hoping the poirier fight provides those answers. I dont care who wins i just dont want a flash ko as soon as conor taps dustins chin.
