I bumped into an interesting fact earlier today. Looking at the Top 15 UFC featherweight rankings and comparing Jose Aldo's past challengers; the result was that none of them competed with top 3 ranked contenders in the division. For example, Chad Mendes, Aldo's most recent challenger only fought three top 15 ranked in the UFC. Nik Lentz (8), Clay Guida (12), and Darren Elkins (14). Furthermore, if we look at Ricardo Lamas' path to the title, the only Top 15 ranked fighter he fought was Cub Swanson (4).

Now if we look at Connor's path to the title, he's fought two in the top 10 and one in the top 15. Beating UFC ranked Max Halloway (13), Dustin Poirier (6), and Dennis Siver (10). The UFC in no way gifted Connor a path to the title in these opponents.

Some might argue that Connor was gifted opponents catering to his style, but if you look at every one in the top 15 aside from Frankie Edgar (2) and Chad Mendes (1), Connor would have probably beaten them. Also, the last two challengers to Aldo did not have to face anyone in the Top 3. So, Connor's road to the title is as legit as his trash talk.

Are you kidding? Don't you remember all of the beasts that Mendes had to beat in order to get his 2nd title shot?

    Cody "The Shit Brickhouse" McKenzie
    Yaotzin "The Legend" Meza
    Darren "The Apocalypse" Elkins
    Clay "Mr. Perfect" Guida

and to top it all off, a FOTY performance against Nik Lentz

Of course holloway, dustin, and dennis weren't the most elite, but they are still very talented fighters that conor absolutely dominated

Let's not forget the road Frankie took to get to Aldo:

    Benson Henderson (L)
    Benson Henderson (L)

Drop weight classes, defeat no one. Fight for the title.

Watching Edgar sitting there biting his tongue in the booth, my only thought was that Conor was getting a gift and Edgar was getting fucked.

I mentioned Elkins, Lentz, and Guida. McGregor would have had easy gifts in Mckenzie and Meza and would have beaten Elkins, Lentz, and Guida too.

    What's your argument?

Not an impressive road to a title shot....

Max Halloway was coming off a loss.
Dustin Poirier was a good win
Dennis Siver was not top 10 with one win in his last four and getting caught for PED's

I just find it funny with a little hype and talk people are calling him GOAT. He has never faced a top five, never been a champion, and only face one ranked opponent in his career....

The whole hold me back while I yell and showing a bar in Ireland is too WWE for me. If he loses this title fight or gets TKO'ed fast it will be the biggest hype bust in UFC history and actually pretty funny.

Poirier was #5. And whether you like it or not, Siver was top-10 before the fight was even put together.

And to reiterate TS' point, which of Aldo's opponents have had some monster run to the title shot?

division is a bit top heavy. A lot of people don't like the fact that Connor hasn't had to fight any of the established top 5. But I'm all for the fight. And I still think he loses to Aldo and Edgar.

Fucked out of what? He had his chance and lost. Also, if you look at his current run, which he beats Cub Swanson (ranked 4), Charles Oliviera (9), and unranked Bj Penn. No body in the top 3? Why is he deserving?

That's still better than beating a declining #6 and a laughably bogus #10

Less deserving people have got title shots for sure. The only other argument is Edgar and Aldo already fought him.

The only reason Siver was ranked top 10 with wins over Diego Nunes, Nam Phan and Charles Rosa is because he was booked to fight Connor.

As a matter of fact, he was ranked #11 or so and was mysteriously bumped up for the inestimable privilege of being booked to fight McGregor. It was weird that he was top 10 with zero ranked wins, BEFORE he was trashed by Swanson.

Frankie should be rooting for Conor. He has a much better chance in that fight than he does against Aldo.
