Thinking about getting this as my 1st camera, mostly because I hear once you download the hack for it, it becomes super awesome for video.

The problem is that it doesn't come with any lenses. And I don't know enough to know what type a noob should start with. Is there some kind of general lense that's good for most purposes? I figure I could start with that, and then get lenses for more specialized purposes later.

Well it all depends on how you plan on using that camera. Sporting events, weddings, up close shots etc etc.... For an all around lenses you can go with 20mm f1.7 It is small and compact. I don't have much experince with panasonic but I have also used the Panasonic 14-140mm. Nice all round focal range, nice auto focus, very nice image stabilization.

I wish I could help you out more but that is all I have to offer.

that's kind of expensive tbh. If you want super awesome video, you might be better off with a Canon 60D + magiclantern... for roughly similar price, but a whole huge world of lens options.

take a look at magiclantern videos here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/musicvideo

under community videos, there's a lot of other high quality stuff.

People have been using the GH2 on the skateboard video industry now because it has a super awesome anti-aliasing/moir

I got the 60D and the 5DmkII, they're both awesome cameras, but they have many cons regarding video that the GH2 seems not to. Not to mention the prices of the lenses and other equipment as well. Canon gear can be really expensive.

Been wondering about trying the Magic Lantern for a while now, but something always stops me from downloading it. haha. Maybe I'm too worried about losing my warranty. It definitely improves your DSLR videos though.

I love my 24-70mm. It's pretty versatile for video stuff.

gh2 seems like it has slightly better video quality, but not necessarily better video package.

you can get canon gear for relatively cheap and the lens selection is amazing comparatively. I guess it depends what you shoot. I've seen the 60D being used at weddings and events, but never seen the GH2.

being a 2x crop, the GH2 also gives up on DOF control, which makes more of a difference than the subtle video sharpness advantages. As for hacked versions, both cameras hackable from my understanding, and Magiclantern is pretty awesome for video. You can do HDR video with the 60D, not sure if possible on GH2 hacked.

That's why I own Canon, but only because I want to be a pro videomaker and I take lots of stills. If you want something that's cheap and awesome for the price, you can't go wrong with the GH2. It's a superb little camera.

In the end it all depends on how much you can spend and what you're going to shoot though, every camera has its pros and cons. Even the 1Dx, lol.

Well first of all, I'd recommend going Nikon.

If you're just getting started and want to learn technique then I suggest:

I shoot with a D200 and an 18-200mm lens.

GH2 owner in here.

The GH2 is way superior than the 60D with magic lantern, except for stills, Canon is superior. For video, the GH2 is king.

I see you want to film, although I do not know one.

14-42 kit lens, not the greatest, but yet a handy lens for loads of situations, cheap, the first version focuses slowly by moments, yet its very usuable

20mm 1,7 is good for photo, horrible for video. Slow slow slow focus and very noisy autofocus.

samyang/rokinon 7,5mm f3,5 fisheye, only if you want to film skateboarding

slr magic 35mm f1,7, dirt cheap and great low light results for video, has a film look to it, not so good for pictures.

leica 25mm f1,4; awesome, my next purchase
