From my experience I've found tht people who regularly compete have a lot more grit and heart than "recreational" players. Personally, I find it helps me see what areas I need to work on and makes me more focused in training as I'm working towards something tangible.
You also see different styles....some places don't work kneebars and ankle locks that much, some have a lot of guys with a wrestling background, others have mostly BJJ guys, etc.
I competed in NAGA with only a months worth of training. Lost to a kid with more experience and a few comps under his belt but I was happy with how I performed even though I lost by points.
i plan to compete ASAP but i want to at least be comfortable with my game. i think thats how most people should look into it. if you feel ur game is pretty good then head out to a comp. ull quickly find out if u were right or not. and if u werent when u get back home its time to step up ur training so u can take the next one. always try to take ur mistakes and turn them into ur greatest strengths. thats my goal at least.
