I love both sports. Can't really choose training in one over the other. My first amateur was in kickboxing. My second, was a boxing fight.

This was due to a knee injury. When it comes to competing in the future, what thoughts do you have on how I should proceed:

Should I compete in just one of the sports, or should I sometimes compete in amateur boxing, sometimes in amateur kickboxing? Is there a harm in preparing for and competing in both sports?

What's your knee like now? Probably less chance of injuring it again in boxing.

No real harm in it, but from what most people that I've seen is that they'll primarily be kickboxers who supplement their training with boxing. If you're going to want to get better at boxing by itself, you'll have to dedicate more time to it than what you might like.

Better to excel at one than to be lackluster at both.

I didnt think you could hold an amateur boxing licence and be allowed to compete in any other combat sport, even at an amateur level. Am I wrong in thinking this? Im in the UK though

Here in the U.S., Muay Thai fights are less frequent then amateur boxing matches so I put my fighters in USA Boxing matches to keep them from going stale due to a lack of fights.

Contrary to what a lot of people believe on Sherdog, a Muay Thai fighter can have good boxing skills and perform well in boxing matches.

For the record, I train my fighters using the Dutch style, so punches and combinations are worked A LOT and that makes the transition easier for them.

In the US you can compete in all combats sports at the amateur level.

Kickboxing will allow you to still supplement with the occasional boxing lesson and compete in the occasional boxing amateur tournament. Doing the reverse isn't the best idea.

I'm fairly certain you can. James Zikic has competed in amateur boxing, pro-boxing, K-1 and MMA, amongst others I'm sure.

Pretty sure he competed in other combat sports when he was still an amateur boxer.

Have a look at http://www.abae.co.uk/aba/assets/File/rules_of_boxing.pdf

page 39 first point reads

"The registered holder of an ME3 SHALL not compete in any combat sports, except Amateur Boxing. Failure to comply with this, will result in the ME3 being withdrawn and disciplinary action may ensue".

Youre right that Zikic has competed as an amateur boxer, whilst being a pro MMA fighter.. Id guess the rules have changed since then?

I dont believe Zikic has had any amateur boxing experience

OK I stand corrected, but Zikic definately has amateur boxing experience, he won the London ABAs.

And funnily enough I was just reading the same interview.

Damn that REALLY sucks for you guys out in the U.K.

Come out here to the States and compete in any combat sport you want...

Since your knee is a problem i would lean more towards straight boxing, but if doesnt cause a problem kicking then it doesnt matter.

If you wanted get high level in boxing then don't kickbox at the same time, but to kickbox at a top level I think boxing at the same time wouldnt hurt it since thats 50% of the game.

As people above have posted it's shitty in uk not being able compete in other combat sports if you ammy box, I'm thinking about starting training mma at the same time as boxing too but worried about getting injured while getting subbed, have been before and had to stop training for whole year.
