i competed in my first submission grappling tournament this past weekend. there were only three kids in my weight class so it was weird, but still good experience. my first match i got taken down and looked for a kimura from my guard, but it wasn't there. i then put my feet on his hips, pushed off, and stood back up. we circled and then he shot in again, but this time i caught him in a guillotene(sp?) and dropped back into guard. he taped about 5 seconds later. i won my first match at about 1:45.

my second match didn't go so well. this match was for first place in my weight class. the kid was bigger than me and stronger so i had problems. the match started and we circled and i shot in for a single, but he defended so i fell back into guard. he didn't follow me so i stood back up and we're on our feet again. this time he shoots in on me and gets the single. i'm in full guard, but because he's stronger than me i had trouble controlling him. i finally threw up a sloppy armbar and he easily pulled out got to side mount and then mounted me. they stopped the match because his nose was bleeding. i must have hit his nose or something when i went for the armbar. after cleaning up the blood they restarted us in the same position. he had full mount and i was trying to reverse him, but couldn't. after a couple tries i reversed him and ended up in his guard, but before i could do anything the time ran out and he won on points. he didn't even go for one sub or even work to pass my guard at all.

overall, i was happy with how i did. looking back at the vid i wish i would have done something different in guard, but that's why i was there...to gain experience. i tried uploading the vids(there are two cuz my girlfriend stopped when they were cleaning up the bllood) so if they don't work, i'm sorry. also sorry about the quality. it was taken off my digital camera. any suggestions you have for me after seeing the vid i'm up for reading them.

Ill comment on the wrasslin part ..I will let the jits guys comment on your guard.
In match 2 1st thing I notice is you gave up on the takedwon too early. When you had the single and he was countering you shouldve pulled his leg in tighter and tried to turn the corner. If you dont know what that means all that is : If you had his right leg, just circle around to the side of the leg you have.

next, what allowed him to get the takedown on you is You stood up VERY sraight when trying to tie up his head. Also after he shot you had a chance to counter with a spprawl. Pulling guard is ok....I GUESS... but maybe if you took him down you win that match,..then agian Kudos for having the sac to grapple!

yeah after watching the video i noticed i was standing almost straight up. i should've been lower, but now i know that. thanks for the advice man!

K, on the first vid. He was in you guard and you kept on letting him posture up. Like, you would break his posture, only for him to posture back up again.

TIPS for breaking posture while someone is in your guard:
1. Throw your legs forward and make him come on top of you, this breaks his balance and he is open for sweeps
2. Once you throw your legs forward, over or underhook one of his arms (overhook works best for me) and with your other hand, grab the back of his head.
3. Climb your leg as high up his back as you possibly can
4. Once all this is done, look for triangles, armbars, sweeps, etc. The way that works best for me is, I go in this order once I have his posture broken: I look and set up for triangles, then armbars, then sweeps, change the order a lil bit, You always want him to be defending and countering, when he does defend your triangle/armbar/sweep, transition to something else.

You did good though bro.

When going for that armbar, your hips have to be as high up as they can, makes the armbar deeper and more tighter.

Also, when you went for the armbar, you put your foot on his hip, he prolly knew or had an idea that it was coming.

What I like to do for armbars from guard is, I dont place my feet on his hips at all, unless im going for sweeps. After I break his posture, hes gonna give something, if his elbow is resting on your chest or stomach area, theres the armbar! I just swing my legs towards the arm I want, then grab the wrist with both hands and stretch. If you do it quick enough, he'll be like, "what the fuck, he has my arm"

Good job bro, keep training!!

the biggest problem with your guard is, you weren't doing anything with it... and when you were trying, your hips stayed in the same spot, there was no hip movement.

I train at NO RULES located in brookyn center, trained for about 5 months and I beat guy in the gi division and he tired me out and I almost won my second match but gased and got armbared. I plan on competing in naga in may. MMA maybe a few years down the line.
Were you train? Peace out!

I love it there they have BJJ and some crazy kung fu stuff, I pay 100$ a month well worth it. The instruction there is very good and the instructor cares about you, the people are really nice there also. DuDe do you have a myspace account if you do post a link. That way if you fight mma any time soon I could watch and cheer you on!

Two things i hate about tournaments.

Trying not to have sex the week or weeks prior to the tournament.. man im struggling not to fwap one out right now.. just so my face doesnt explode, and so i dont ravage my girlfriend in my sleep.

and the little nervousness you get right before the fight.
