I have only been in bjj for a few months now and have already heard many negative comments on earguards everything from "man up, get ur flowers, and wear'em with pride. thats weak dude...real weak" or how about "Ear guards are fuckin bitch plain and simple. If you're worried about your ears so much then go try fishing or some other activity"

The way I see it is if you feel better or wanna be on the safe side wear earguards.. even the great Renzo Gracie wears earguard's time to time... R.I.P. Ryan

We have this wrestler guy in our class and whenever he wears them I give him shit, saying that they help protect against certain chokes and also if I get his back an he's thrashign around I get these hard plastic cups hitting me in the face and shit.

Ear guards are fuckin bitch plain and simple. If you're worried about your ears so much then go try fishing or some other activity.

I'm married and I wear headgear out of respect for my wife how finds cauliflower ear unattractive. I feel there's nothing more manly than honoring your wife.

FWIF, bjj619 I will agree with you that certain earguards do do pose a problem to training partners. I'm not a fan of the clunky plastic kinds.

The one I use is the soft kind. Basically looks like this:

The only complaints I've ever heard are from the hard outer shell of some ear guards rubbing against people's faces. I just got some Cliff Keen Signatures. They're the best pair of ear protectors I've used so far. They're really thin and sturdy. They're also made out of very soft mat material, so they don't hurt whoever you're rolling with.

Some people are more prone to cauliflower ear than others.

Most guys that say things like earguards are for sissies have never had their ears blow up even once. They are the guys who eventually say "man my ears are killing me," and are on the mat the next day with earguards.

Headgear is fine and an accepted part of grappling. I don't wear it, but I don't have anything against people who do either.

It is very silly to yell at someone for wearing protective gear. It also does not really hurt that much to roll against unless you purposefully use it as a weapon against your opponent. I've rolled against lots of types of headgear, and it has never hurt me.

You sound like a wimp. I wrestle with headgear on against guys who don't wear headgear in practice, and I've never had a wrestler complain.

This times eleventy-billion. I wear them for one simple reason: because my wife asked me too. She doesn't find shrek ears attractive.

Train hard and get better than the assholes who talk shit, then when they ask you for advice one day, just say...
    "It's the earguards."

That is some pretty stupid shit to say. Next up they'll be putting plates in their lower lips...

No need to look like you got mangled by a chimp. Wear ear guards if your ears get sore.

It's a direct quote I read it on another thread where this guy asked for suggestions on good earguards for bjj.... people were giving him such a hard time and I just had to post the video of even Renzo wearing some from time to time
