Combat Submission Wrestling

I hate the idea of submissions being isolated from wrestling.

I train in CSW under Mateo De Los Reyes on the east coast. Mateo is one of the lead associate instructors under Erik Paulson. CSW is basically a blending of BJJ, Judo, Shooto, Sambo, Catch, and wrestling. I think its great and we have plenty of guys where i train that compete in Grappling tournaments. The only downside is if you have poor self control. CSW is an adults only class so leglocks, including heel hooks, are taught very early on. Paulson is known as a leglock specialist so their is an emphasis on becoming proficient with them. Every third class we allow striking while were on the ground to make you more comfortable groundfighting in a real or MMA situation. It sort of follows the JKD philosophy by taking the most effective subs and other moves from each of the above styles and incorporating it into one huge arsenal. I took BJJ for a bit an i love CSW in comparison. Its more aggressive and submission i your number one priority.

I think if more people started training in catch-as-catch-can they will adapt and evolve and be a dominant art again...

A lot of you guys are reffering to CW. CSW is a fight system created by Erik Paulson which blends a mix of striking and submission grappling into one art. It is basically MMA, and it has a lot of focus on submissions and includes some pretty cool unorthidox techniques. I would know because I train in it.

You explained it very well. I think CSW is on of the best systems you can train in to prepare for competition in MMA.

CSW = Faster pace have to think more because you have no GI to hold on to and what not and you cant just sit back and relax. I also do CSW Erik Paulson will be coming to my school soon, my teacher was taught by him.

If your in VA or live near Va beach come check us out, we do CSW on Mondays and wednesday, about to start doing it fridays also. I think erik, Saulo, and sherk will be coming to our school around march/April.

Ringmaster i train at Global Martial Arts in VB. Were off Centerville Turnpike and kempsville road. I believe you guys are doing Paulsons seminar with us in February if I heard correctly. What ive been told is that eastern, hybrid, Global, and trident are all going to be at the seminar. We are going to rent the gym where the VB police train to accomodate all the students. There may also be a smaller, shorter private session for each school. How long have you been at eastern? ive got a friend who trains there, fred cummings, know him?

Ive been there for around 2 months now, have you heard anything about a no-gi tournament coming up in a month or so In Va beach? If so Im gonna be going of course since ive only been doing CSW for about 2 months I will be doing the easyest one I can, but do you know the rules for No gi? If so could you let me know? I may know him still not 100% with name, what does he do? Stand up BJJ or CSW? Or all? Anyways cool to see someone on here around me. Anyways How old are you and what weight class would you be if you were going to do No Gi?
Just went to the page both schools do the same stuff pretty much and at the same time :O

Man I wish I could learn some of this CW/CSW. It looks uber-badass.

It is. Go to Erik paulsons website and look under the affiliates section. Many of his more well known affiliates and their schools are listed there. Good Luck, its well worth the time and the money.

Interesting. But, if there's less stalling, how come they allow pins?

If youre referring to CSW then there are no pins. Submission and the occasonal KO only. Its a little bit more aggressive because of the catch wrestling influence. Even though its takes heavily from BJJ, the catch side of things puts less emphasis on Position before submission.
