hand to hand combat like karate and kung fu stuff
Military combat like saving private ryan and FMJ
Swords and weaponry excluding guns like LOTR and 300

If I had to rate them I would say
Military
swords
hand to hand

My preference in action scenes is entirely about quality, realism, & creativity, and nothing to do with what weapons are used.

As long as Orlando Bloom isn't involved I prefer a good sword fight.

I prefer the ones with a story.

Military movies tend to be the best.

Dont care just as long as they incorporate a good scissor

Insert sword fight joke

It's all about the story and the characters. If those things are in place, then it doesn't really matter. That said, there is a certain amount of gravitas that lethal violence intrinsically possesses that can really further a movie. Beating someone up with your fists and feet just doesn't have the same finality to it.

Ever since I started doing combat sports and watching MMA, I haven't been able to enjoy Kung Fu movies anymore. I guess I just can't suspend my disbelief. Even movies that are otherwise excellent, like Crouching Tiger or Ip Man, I roll my eyes during the fighting. John Wick was a recent exception, though.

I was like this at first but recently I've rediscovered my love of Kung Fu movies. I've been able to compartmentalize my expectations for the two.

My ideal fight scene prioritizes creativity over realism. I want the scene to be realistic in so far as the actions performed are humanly possible which means no jumping over buildings but the actual fight itself can be flashy. Ideally the environment should be used. Kicking off of walls or using tables and chairs briefly helps spice fights up. Jackie Chan is the master at this.

If its a realistic fight I want it to be really gritty, not look like an MMA match. That means some sloppy, instinctive ground work with biting and scratching instead of high level BJJ. Something like the fight in The Revenant.
