The bill, introduced in the state Senate Friday, prohibits districts from supporting a teachers strike and requires schools to dock a teacher’s pay for each day they participate in a walkout. The teachers could also face up to six months in jail and a $500 daily fine if they violate a court order to stop striking. Under the new law, sponsored by state Sen. Bob Gardner (R) and state Rep. Paul Lundeen (R), a teacher could be immediately fired without a hearing.

It is still one of the most bizarre things we face as a society. Athletes, politicians, war criminals and actors get millions and we still pay teachers crap.

And now this?

I find it hard to believe that Hitler made that statement. Typically, leaders do not come right out and tell everybody that they are going to screw them. Sounds like something somebody made up for a meme.

But on to the actual point, yeah that is completely absurd. You cannot jail somebody for not going to work.

If you are striking, should you be at risk of having pay reduced (especially for the days not worked) and even fired? Yes. It isn't a free ride

Should a government step in and say you will be jailed and fined for simply not doing your job out of the only way to effectively protest unfair low wages or poor working conditions? Oh fuck no

Good for teachers banding together, supporting each other (when enough strike, employers can't fire them all or even be selective about which to boot really), and sticking up for being some of the most important professions in this country that are criminally undervalued

How much are they planning to dock their pay if they go on strike? I have no problem with them not getting paid for the days they're striking. Fining them and jail time is asinine.

How anyone who actually has to work for a living votes Republican is beyond comprehension.

This is tuff, the teachers union signs a contract for a certain number of years, but then in the middle of the contract decide that they want to strike?

And since they teach our children you want to take away the same remedy every other employer has - well minus the 6 month sentence.

I suppose if you really want it that way, the teachers; as a group, simply have to quit their job instead of striking and then demand higher salaries when the school tries to hire them back.

This idea is so dumb you almost have to assume it's just lip service to their supporters. How exactly do you jail someone in the US for making use of the First Amendment?

Just two jackasses playing at showing the little guy who's boss.

Thank Reagan for the sorry state of American unions.

This is my caveat as well. The strike should have occurred while the contract was under negotiation if the terms offered were unacceptable. Once signed union members should honor the contract for its duration. While plotting their future course of action.

I think Facist and some ultra Marxists/Stalinist dictatorship do arrest people for not working and send them to the gulags.

In Soviet Russia Jobs assign you!

So, my sister is an assistant principal here in Arizona, where the teachers are doing the #redfored and striking.

I'm not sure how the pay works, however, because of the contractual nature of the teachers salary and pay, they will be working the same amount of days.

The missed days will be added to the end of the school year. If you are not a salaried employee, such as the office assistants, janitor, etc... you will not be paid your hourly wages (naturally) and there will be no work available because the schools are shut down; though some staff is still needed because some parents are either unaware or don't care. But they will be paid for their summer work (when days are added)

Teachers here are compensated extremely poorly. Though, I do feel for some of the kids. She said that many were scared/worried because the only place they can get a meal is at school...

I know quite a few teachers, it is an extremely difficult career, with very poor compensation, very demanding and stressful. I believe compensating teachers better would not only encourage more passionate young people to become a teacher, but actually enjoy their careers and continue to be passionate. It would show in the kids' lives as well.

well, if the people striking are part of a union, shouldnt the union be paying the strikers? isnt that what their union dues go to? why should the state pay for people to go on strike?

they are teachers; so shouldnt they teach to get paid? if they don't like their profession, then they should find a new one.

edit:
jailing someone for striking is stupid. might as well make all protests against the law

Jailing people striking is unAmerican.
