Hey, does anyone living in a colder climate have a recommendation for a non-cotton shirt to wear while training outside in the winter? I'm leaning towards something breathable yet warm as sometimes my training will have intervals where i'm not moving as fast/hard at all times. Just wanted some opinions before committing the dough to Under Armour, Nike, etc. as the shirts can be pricey (want to make sure i buy something quality.) This is something i'll wear under a breathable hoodie i just bought. Thanks in advance.

You're just running or?

Nike I've found to be good. I can't get underarmour here so I can't really comment but you always hear good things about them (a ton of pros in all sports wear them as a indication)

Thanks Mackz and everybody else. Under Armour seems like the best route to go. Can't wait to get some new gear. Not sure why i waited so long wearing tons of cotton...

Are you after a breathable thermal?Helly Hansen make good ones that last ages?Good for running in,although i use mine for training in my garage too..

Didn't have a specific material in mind, just knew that layers of cotton was not working as well as i would have liked. Just looking for opinions of what other people use and how they like it, thereby saving some dough on 'trial-and-error' as some of the gear is pricey and i'm not loaded. I want something that is breathable yet warm. Thanks for the suggestion, i'll definitely look into it.

UA is very breathable, and if you want, you can get a compression style or loose fit..it's up to you. Also, it wicks away any sweat off your body..you'll stay warm or cool depending on what gear you get, Hot gear or Cold gear. That's whats great about UnderArmor. I picked the loose fit but next time i will be getting the compression fit long sleeve for the summer :).

As you say, cotton is no good ,even in layers as it absorbs water and holds it in.Obyiously this isnt too much of a problem in summer heat, but in winter it causes problems due to you being soaking wet in a cold environment and heat loss ,chilling of the body ,etc.

Wool is a good natural fabric with good insulating properties ,even when wet,a lot of cyclists use wool clothing(no I am not talking about the jumper you got last xmas from Auntie Mabel...their stuff is a bit more technical).

For thermal qualities that are also breathable you are probably looking at man made fabrics.Depending on what you are using this for and in what conditions you are training in I'd suggest a breathable thermal(dont know about UA) and then your breathable hoodie or a breathable windproof jacket(if running/cycling or similar).Bear in mid that if the wind is bitter then a hoodie will not probably do that much for you.You need something to stop the wind penetrating your clothes etc.

Why not pick up a copy of running magazine and look thru those or hit one of the websites for ideas?

Oh and don't forget about taking care of your nether regions too...
