LONDON – In June, UFC welterweight Rory MacDonald will fight the final bout on his current contract with the industry-leader, starting a countdownto free agency that’s by now become a familiar story to MMA observers.

MacDonald (18-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC), who at UFC Fight Night 89 faces Stephen Thompson (12-1MMA, 7-1 UFC), is the latest UFC fighter to forgo the certainty of a new contract for the potential bigger payouts on the open market, joining a small group that’s made a big noise in the industry. Benson Henderson, Aljamain Sterlingand Matt Mitrione all completed their contracts, with Henderson and Mitrione eventually signing with Bellator.

So far, only Henderson has fought for the Viacom-owned promotion. This past Friday, the ex-UFC lightweight champ was thoroughly outclassed in a welterweight bout against champ Andrey Koreshkov, lending a sour note to the optimistic tenor brought by his defection.

When MacDonald’s next move is mentioned, Bellator is an obvious choice. And while Bellator President Scott Coker said he won’t get in the way of any fighter’s process in becoming a free agent, he has some advice for those who are thinking about doing so.

“You should fight your fights out, because we’re here too,” Coker told MMAjunkie at a press conference for Bellator 158, which takes place at London’s O2 Arena. The event is co-headlined by fired UFC welterweight Paul Daley (38-13-2 MMA, 3-0 BMMA) and onetime UFC title challenger Josh Koscheck (17-10 MMA, 0-0 BMMA), another veteran who signed with the No. 2 player when the numbers on a new contract didn’t add up.

Coker said the decision to test the market boils down to smart business.

“Now, there’s more than one buyer, which is good for the market, which is good for individuals, which is good for the league, which is good for the industry,” he said.

MacDonald has an important fight ahead in Thompson, who’s won his past six and most recently knocked out ex-champ Johny Hendricks. The two headline the FOX Sports 1-televised fight night on June 18 at TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Thoughts of moving elsewhere should be last on the Canadian’s mind. Right now, he’s gambling at a victory that will boost his value when the bidding starts for his services. When that time comes, however, Coker said he’s got his eye on the fighter.

“He’s a guy that we’d be interested in talking to, if the time is right,” Coker said.

Bellator's Scott Coker: Time's right for UFC vets like Rory MacDonald to test free agency

I think the trick is to get to free agency but don't sugest you want to go elsewhere. Just keep telling your boss you have faith in yourself and want to keep winning before you resign.

If you make it known too obviously like Will Brooks and Sterling your boss will screw you over in marketing and matchups.

Exactly, I don't know what Brooks is thinking trying to trash his promoter and still expecting to easily move to the competition.

Coker seems like a way cooler boss to work for....Just saying!

Could you imagine Bellator promoting Rory? They'd go all in on the Canadian Psycho thing.

IMO, the free agency makes good sense for a cash grab on the guys at the end of their career and likely outside of ever being in contention again in the UFC. For a guy like Rory, I do not think it would be a good long term decision.

Doubt Rory leaves,
Have him fight Lima, then Koreshkov, then MVP , then the return of Ben Askren.... Plenty of fresh fights to be made.

Askren just signed a new OneFC deal so that wont happen.

Koreshkov, Lima, Daley, MVP would be the fights, good fights but doubt he leaves.

Also with what they paid Bendo and the ratings he brought in I wonder if they pay Rory more than that.

Is Rory vs Koreshkov a fight thats gonna do big ratings? Rory is young and top 3 WW but he's not a huge draw.

Prelim rating of only 618K isn't a good sign.

Like I been saying forever on here......Bellator's biggest problem will always be cost of shows vs advertising money coming in. They make there nut on advertising. They don't have any massive guarantee TV contracts anywhere in the world. A lot of little ones and bet you anything that most pay very little for the content outside of a handful of them. Attendance and sponsorship fill in the rest. Is Viacom/Spike willing to see it through knowing they need to spend money on stars to improve long term ratings that in return will allow them to raise commercial time cost, media contracts, and sponsorship cost. But can they keep the bean counters at bay while they build the product over a few years. I'm not sure how many higher cost free agents they can afford but they have to do it to increase avg. viewership. Unfortunately a guy like Rory might fall flat for you after spending a lot and same can be said about Bendo. Moves like that without the right match ups gives bean counters ammunition. Great fighters but they aren't really big needle movers by themselves. Now Bendo vs Rory would probably do well with a Thompson vs Chandler or whatever as a co-main.

I feel like on of the main reasons for these bad ratings were the nba play offs. Bellator should avoid the nfl and the nba like the fucking plague. I mean some regular non tentpoles do better.

I wonder what went wrong here.
