CM Punk's Elite Training Partners Announced

Great choice for a guy who hasn't had any real fight experience.

No one at that gym would trot a hurt guy out to his eventual death!

I see what you did there, but the fight doc that night was 100% to blame. Not the guy trying to win his fight.

People seem abnormally shocked by this. Do Sherdoggers think that he had a stunt double or something for all of his matches? You'd think Sakuraba and Lesnar would've proven this level of conditioning by now to ALL skeptics, but I've been wrong before.

Apparently a fighter isn't an official "athlete" unless they competed in a college sport in addition to their schoolwork, instead of jumping into their initial profession of choice. Oh well. People will learn.

People have their biases and most people will fight to the death to defend those biases. No amount of evidence has much effect. It's easier for them to go through life thinking, "Durr, professional wrestlers are worthless, durr" than to admit they were wrong about an ultimately meaningless thing.

Joking aside, it's a great choice. Duke's camp has produced some really young UFC-caliber guys, which is a sign it can get a guy ready in limited time. I know Brooks has some casual BJJ experience, and assuming he's in good physical condition and is durable/stays injury-free, he can learn a lot in 8 - 16 months of training.

This whole notion that you have to train for ten years in the "new" UFC is bunk anyway. Fighting is still 90% natural talent, which is why guys like Jon Jones and Pettis can be champs so young, and why some guys can barely train and still be top-10 fighters.

The only "bunk" here is your idiot belief that there are top 10 fighters who "barely train."

I wonder who is the superior wrestler. Would love to see footage of Askren and Punk grappling.

You're more right than most people will admit. Elite competitors are largely born, not made. Either Punk is in that mold or he isn't.

Natural talent is a factor but the right coaches and experience seal the deal.

That's almost the same as rooting for OJ getting a not guilty verdict. Celebrity has its perks.

...

It's manly out of respect for the guy, he doesn't need to fight. He is already set for the rest of his life.

And he's married to AJ Lee. Let's not forget AJ Lee.

wasn't Askren talking shit about Cm Punk's signing doh? that would be awkward

Pro wrestling might take a lot of physical ability to do the stunts but it is still not the same thing.

Being a great ping pong player is not going to make you a great tennis player and being a great tennis player is not going to make you a great ping pong player even is there is some transferable skills involved.

It's not bias. to think someone with no real experience is at a massive disadvantage. Those that have been in some of these sports also know if you are in the bottom of the top 1% of amature work you are not that good. In wrestling if you are on a college team you are already a 1%er and you might suck at that level.

I think AKA would be a better choice, but Rufusport is a good one as well, especially to round out his striking.

There are a lot of Ben Askren marks in here. People are thinking he was shooting on CM Punk but it was just a work.

Go back and read what Askren said. It was about not letting him in but letting someone in with no experience. Askren's problem is with Dana, not Punk.

so he will have the best striking via pettis training and best wrestling via askren.
