apologies for the large images, but can anyone tell me if these cloth shin guards are worth the extra mobility albeit less protection. Are either types know to be more loose?

thanks!

Just to be accurate, leather is not traiditional, the very most of shinguards are synthetic leather.

You mean most shin guards are syntehtic leather and, traditionally, shin guards were not made with leather? I did not know that.

P.S. TS, those shin guards are most likely NOT worth it. What do you intend on using them for?

If you're looking for shinguards for MMA I really really loved my Fairtex Neoprene sleeve pair.. Good enough protection for stand up sparring and can be worn while grappling as well. Now for Muay Thai I just went with the Fairtex traditional shin guards, I can't say I really liked em but they got the job done.. I know plenty of people with Top King shinguards that absolutely love those things and they've held up for 3+ years of heavy usage.

cloth are good for amateur fights, however, they have a very short lifespan.

I've used cloth for smoker's as well and I liked them. But just like you said, they don't last too long, I remember going through a bazillion pairs of those growing up before I finally bought a decent pair when I got a job lol

These are typical Thai shinguards. They're wider than the calf on both sides, with a protrusion on the top that extends the protection beyond the top strap if you check with your knee. Multiple layers of padding help to disperse impacts, and even something that hits you from the side will still be partially caught by the guard.

These are padded in layers like MT shinguards, but have a neoprene sleeve on the back, a level top which stops below the kneecap, and offer slightly less protection to the side of the calf. You can use them while grappling, but they don't help so much for high checks or when their shin catches your shin off-center. They're fine to use for whatever, though.

These only have a half-inch of padding, but are lower-maintenance and are meant to fit under long pants for TMAs. Like the hybrid ones, the protection stops at the top of the sleeve and wraps sideways around the leg instead of sticking out to the sides. Unlike the hybrid ones, there's only one layer of one density of padding. They're fine to use with drills, during pad-work, or for light contact sparring that involves grappling, but hard sparring with these would be like showing up in 4oz MMA gloves (or thick handwraps!) when everyone else was wearing 16oz boxing gloves. Doing so gives your shin slightly less protection, and your sparring partner a lot less protection.

Compare the description and reviews for the different ones here, since they're all by the same manufacturer as your pictured example:

So far I've noticed cloth is for broke dick people or ones who think they are doing shin conditioning.

exactly what I use them for. If you plan on sparring a lot your partners are going to get pissed very quickly if you keep blasting them with these piss poor excuse for a shin guard. Real asshole move wearing these outside of an actual fight. Cough up the dough and buy a pair of top kings, theyll last forever and you/sparring partners wont get hurt.

I confess on using the cheap ass cloth ones as majority of my sparring partners all have the same. And they fall apart and wear out quickly. I see them taped on some people. Chalk up the extra dough, buy a good pair. I'm ordering some TKs myself since I'll be sparring more. Otherwise in a few months you'll be coughing up money for another pair anyway...like myself.

As long as you don't go full force in sparring it should be ok, if not you are a dick.

cloth are a waste of money and offer next to no protection.
