This was when I was in the Army, there were these machine operated targets that pop up and go back down you hit them. Sometimes they would need maintenance after use and maintenance crew guys would go down range to fix them. They would obviously clear the area before shooting began, but on occasion, we forgot. It was turn for my squad to shoot and our CO was yelling over the megaphone for us load, and then chamber. He yelled, “Safety off, Ready to Fire!” And I placed my finger on the trigger and looked down my sights for where I expected the target to pop up when I saw an object down range moving eerily like a person and take cover. Right before anybody could get a shot off, our CO all of the sudden screamed, “Don’t fire! Don’t’ fire! Safeties on!!” A person peeked out from the mound where I was aiming at. Turns out one of the maintenance guys was still there and nobody bothered to check. The CO screamed at him to come back and dude ran back like his life depended on it. I could hear my CO sigh into the microphone and go, “Shit, we almost blew you away.” That was the closest I got to shooting, and perhaps killing, a person. It would’ve been fucked up if my CO didn’t spot him in time and we just started shooting. One other time I nearly ran over my friend right after I got my driver’s license because I wanted to slow down and wave as he was crossing the road in front my car, but I accidentally sped up and nearly flattened him.
