He is right. I've been fortunate to have been brought up as a kid watching Clint Eastwood's movies, than whatever bullshit they put out today. You have to wonder where the loud, obnoxious, unapologizing American has gone nowadays, one that all Europeans begrudgingly respected. I never, ever thought that socialism would go over in that country. I figured that the people were just too hard-boiled, too conscious of their rights and freedoms, to admit that they need help from the government to survive.

Perhaps the struggles and failures in Vietnam or Iraq have demoralized the people.

@Jack V Savage hit the nail on the head. The things that weren't called racist when he was young were still racist...no matter the label. The man was born in 1930. That means that by the time the Civil Rights act passed he was already in his 30's. He grew up in a world with separate water fountains, schools, train cars being legal. Where you really could kill a black person for looking at a white person the wrong way and your community would applaud you for doing so.

If Clint is defining things based on how he remembers them in his youth then that's a pretty good reason to ignore Clint.

This happens to every society that conquered large territories.

The conquerors were absolute badasses. Peerless warriors with endless stamina and willpower to succeed. They came from nothing, death would be better than going back to that.

Each generation after though, not so much. They want to emulate their ancestors that brought them such high standards of living and wealth, but they have no way to compete with that accomplishment.

Generation after generation gets weaker and weaker because of the convience that a high quality of life they are born into brings.

The Mongols who conquered Asia grew up wearing mouse hide clothes and eating raw horse meat... their successors grew up in silk sitting on mounds of tribute and eating imported delicacies.

Some truth to this, but it is vastly oversimplified and overlooks a lot of perspective and fact.

Why is it the Mongols great great grand kids fault that he was born into a life of prosperity and affluence as opposed to conflict and deprivation. Is he a 'pussy' simply because he was born into better circumstances?

I should mention i am 47, so I am not a whining millennial sticking up for my own. But if you are going to compare current generations to past, you probably need to start with the fact that for all of it's troubles, and areas of strife, humanity is more human now than at any point in history. The world has never been more free. The world has never been host to more people. And even while acknowledging all of our issues, those people (taken as a whole) have never done better by each other than now.

Sure people might have been 'harder' 500 years ago. But also 500 years ago, a virus would come along and wipe out half the population of a nation or more, because society had not the vaguest grasp of how connected we all were. And prolonged torture and executions were routine for even minor civil offences. Go back a few more generations and we were still throwing virgins into volcanoes in the hope of getting a little more, or little less rain.

People would do well to view generation history along the lines of Maslows Hierarchy of needs. Of course fewer people will know how to hunt and fish when there is an air conditioned food dispensary within walking distance of just about anywhere.

There is a reason every successive generation starts menstruating 'kids these days' when they get older. Because you are measuring their performance on your value and challenge set . Meanwhile, they are standing on our shoulders, trying to get the next rung of the ladder. Good on them!!

Nuclear weapons are the equalizer and if we get too alpha and dominate any more of the world we might get into a MAD situation with a few of our enemies. Yesterdays generations were no more or less pussies than today's. By default each successive generation must deal with the most pressing matters of their era. And even as they deal with those challenges, they are creating the challenges for the next generations.
