Watch Kosei Inoue here. Uchi mata can hit the outside leg, and doesn't have to necessarily go right up the middle. A lot of people get caught up on the leg placement with hane goshi, and I think it's one of the most misunderstood throws throws in Judo. As I understand it, hane goshi is mostly about the springing hip action, and "bouncing" them up and over your hips, and legg about where the leg goes. You'll see hane taught with the leg bent like a bird's wing at 90 degrees, or 45 degrees, or even pretty straight. Without the "springing hip" it's definitely an uchi mata.
Anyways, here's some uchi mata videos from Kosei Inoue, one of the best ever at it, where the leg sweeps up into the far leg.
Ah, so Calasans is basically doing an Inoue uchi mata then?
Maybe the traditional uchi mata is too risky in BJJ if it fails?
