Ciryl Gane won against Francis Ngannou.

It was very close but Cyril even thought he lost.

Best to forget that fight ever happened though

He did a takedown, and then got swept and put on bottom.

He should have won, but the judges don't really know the official scoring criteria or just choose to ignore them. It is what it is. It was really close anyway.<Fedor23><WhatItIs>

Yes, Gane unequivocally won the fifth round according to the scoring criteria set forth in the unified rules, which would have swung the fight in his favor since he won the first two rounds on two judges scorecards. There is a significantly stronger argument for awarding Ngannou the 1st round than awarding him the 5th round.

This youtuber does a good job of explaining it.

Ultimately though it does not matter, to the victor go the spoils, and Gane was not the victor. Gane is a very good fighter with a unique ability to rapidly develop new skills due to his athleticism and he will go into his next fight having made the necessary adjustments to be champion. The deficiencies in Gane's grappling have been exaggerated but holes did exist and a stronger grappler than Ngannou could have capitalized on them to inflict actual damage. It is better Gane take the L now, fix the existing holes in his grappling, and leave no room for the judges to make another bad decision when he inevitably gets another title shot in the not too distant future.

I honestly was rooting for Gane, but the way he finished the fight was like a man who’d accepted his fate and already knew he’d lost... , for the sake of the judging he needed to appear as a guy who thought he won a tight decision... after the final buzzer he looked dejected, head down, posture of the vanquished, you cannot finish the fight as such and expect to win. Judges made the right call.
