A lot of people don't understand his success. They think he is just a strong or tenacious wrestler with some great top bjj. The fact is, Weidman's success is all timing. He is able to capitalize on small mistakes his opponents make, and quickly. It's not always a counter, sometimes it's just seeing a split second chance for something and having the fighter IQ to go for it. IF all he had was great wrestling and bjj, he would just be another dime a dozen mma wrestler, grinding his way to a pretty good record, once in a while impressing people by dominating a guy who is really good at stand up but has no takedown defense. You all know fighters like this, I am sure you can think of 5 off the top of your head.
Knee to stomach, opponent crouches for tenth of a second, got that choke
The people's elbow, one of the best counters in MMA's history
Dropping Maia, the dude who dropped Chael. No that's not pure power, if you notice Maia was reaching for Chris's left leg, he was thinking Chris is gonna knee him, Chris felt the arm touch his leg, knew Maia thought a strike is coming and reacted with a throw. No one even noticed.
Lucky KO? Insane KO power? Great standup? None of the above, super human timing.
