The Navy has finished their investigation into Kyle's decorations, and despite many of us giving him the benefit of the doubt, he indeed lied about his decorations. He claims an extra silver and bronze star which erroneously appeared on his DD-214. He used these as lies to promote himself fraudulently. On top of being a legitimate hero with a silver and multiple bronze stars.

I think of it as the Rickson effect. It doesn't matter that Rickson was legitimately the baddest man on the planet for a time, and regarded so highly by his students and peers; maybe he is even peerless. He still had to lie, pathologically, about his skills and achievements. And so it was with Kyle.

This should put to rest any doubt about his claimed murder of American citizens, his fight with Jesse Ventura, and other matters.

Sad. A legitimate hero and badass shouldn't feel the need to overstate him accomplishments.

The man was very good at killing people with a gun. Not sure what to think of him. But he has some of my respect because he could do the things that I couldn't do.

I don't get it - and I know: it's the Navy.

But if the medals were on his DD-214 in 2009, isn't that basically the legal standard? And why wait until 3 years after his death to correct them?

Not that I care one way or another, but my own DD-214 was missing a couple of ribbons which I wore for years in uniform - no "Stars" or anything like that, but for critical acts of pencil-sharpening and shit like that.

Though I'm no expert, I don't put too much fault on him going off his DD-214. While I would think he'd have known how many Silver and Bronze Stars he had, it was an official record of his awards.

His bullshit about New Orleans, road-side shootings, etc. already confirmed that he was dishonest and self-aggrandizing (the alternative is that he was a traitor and murderer).

I quite agree with the Rickson comparison.

We know he was a badass SEAL and we know he lied about stuff. IMO he got caught up trying to create a brand and there were no more Iraq stories to tell so he created ones here at home to continue selling books.

Even if he lied about the Ventura stuff, Ventura is still a fuckface cocksucker that sued a dead man's widow for millions over some bullshit. Add to that that almost any SEAL I have ever met wishes they could punch Ventura in the face and shit down his throat.

Plus, it was on Kyle's DD-214... my dad only remembers his campaign ribbon but his DD-214 claims like 3 other things that he can't remember receiving in Vietnam.

Yea I could care less about anything else he said but the stuff about New Orleans was something a psycho would say.

Guy had legit skill as a sniper, but that's about it. From what I read about him, he was an asshole.

Lying about medals  like he didn't have enough. I wonder what made him do that.

I would have sued her to. She was profiting off a lie.

I agree he probably should have dropped the lawsuit, but when a thief takes something and dies, you still get it back from the estate. While not theft, this is similar logic. It doesn't make him a cocksucker, and the defamation was not bullshit, he was hurt financially there by lies. Sounds like your SEAL buddies have some serious issues.

And let's not compare the average person's perpetually fucked up decs to a second silver star, please. That's really straining.

He sued Chris Kyle when Kyle was alive.
He died during the process and his death didn't undo the damage to Ventura's career.

SEALs consider themselves family from what I understand. Most of those SEALs that hate Ventura also dislike Kyle and the guy that wrote the book who supposedly shot OBL. They cite, generally speaking, "they're making money off of what is a brotherhood" essentially. I KIND of get what they mean.

I can see that second bit... BUT, it WAS on his DD-214. SOME of this, especially the publicity of it, feels like the Navy going "look, we made a mistake but Kyle fucking profited from it so blame him!"

I would contend that Ventura's career was pretty well damaged by Ventura himself prior to Kyle saying he punched Ventura in the face ala Jeremy Clarkson vs Piers Morgan.

I disagree on the Ventura claim. He took a big hit there and proved it. Ventura has damaged his own credibility with the conspiracy nonsense, no doubt. He's gone almost into Alex Jones territory at times.

I don't buy the bit about not realizing he hadn't earned a second silver star. That argument might be valid for the 5th bronze star.

Bronze star 100% it's valid imo. The silver I can get your argument.

IDK, Ventura did take a hit after the Kyle stuff but my understanding from family and friends in Minnesota he was pretty decently disliked as he left the governor's office and looking back a lot of people say you can almost see him beginning to lose it.

I don't think the Navy has implied that. From what I read (maybe I didn't read everything), they characterized his service for what it was.

I don't think the Navy has implied that.
It kinda feels that way in some ways. I know part of it is Kyle's celebrity given his position as a sniper and his confirmed kills number but I doubt even for a guy like Hathcock or any number of other famous sharpshooters they would have been as public about it.

The Navy was obliged to respond here though, wouldn't you agree? They did so professionally. It's unfortunate for Kyle that his lies have systematically been exposed following his tragic death, but he asked for it. The man gets the benefit of criticism always being held next to his actual heroism, which I think is fair.
