How do you win in Judo?

If you get a throw do you automatically win?
I have seen some fights where there is a some grappling, then others they stand up once they miss a throw and start over.

Anyone want to give a quick run down?

the judge has to determine that the throw is of the highest quality for the "ippon" (i think both shoulders hitting the mat). lesser quality throws get awarded points, grappling is allowed usually for as long as it looks like a submission is imminent, or u can also get an "ippon" by pinning them to the mat for 25 seconds.

A hard, controlled throw that plants the opponent on his back ends the match in an "ippon" or full point.

Lesser throws get scored as waza-ari, yuko or koka, and the match continues on the ground if there is progress. The scoring hierarchy is such that one waza-ari is worth more than any number of yukos and a yuko is worth more than any number of kokas.

A judoist with a waza-ari will then have the lead against a judoist with three yukos and a koka, for example.

A pin for 25 seconds or a submission also count as ippon, as do two waza-ari scores.

Nice, I'd only seen the Ippon in the final match.

An ippon throw is one where the opponent (uke) lands largely on their back with the thrower (tori) using speed, force, and control.

If the throw lands them partially on their back or they lack any of the three main focuses (speed, force, control) it is a lower or non-score throw. -ken

that gold medal ippon was the shizzle, what a way to get it.

I dont profess to being any kind of judo expert, those of you who are: how do u feel about the second ippon (against the bald guy)? is it an obvious/legit full point?

i only ask as the others really demonstrate the power and control, that one against the bald dude, he kind of rolled over as opposed to impacting his cleanly on his back. Not saynig it wasnt an ippon, it just stands out as the least obvious example.

thoughts?

Congrats to Choi, but I hate how ippons are awarded.

I'll be the first to admit I don't know jack about judo and my standup grappling as a whole is garbage, but that is just amazing to watch.

his control and focus is just amazing, whens its aggressive like that judo is exciting as hell to watch

Thanks for posting the gif's. Wang should've won gold too.
