He's definitely wound back the clock in terms of authoritarianism and central control, while ramping up the aggression to boot.
Unfortunately with China as our largest trading partner, while our economic importance to China is marginal, Australia really needs more support to place any actual pressure on them. Whether that's for their economic actions, quasi-colonial expansion into developing nations or their domestic human rights abuses.
There's some hope though for Governments to apply pressure if the Liberal party can continue with their criticism, because they are mostly politically beholden to our mining giants, who are utterly dependent on our trade with China. This is more than the usual Liberal policy of just riding the US coat tails on foreign policy while increasing our economic reliance on China with privatisation and free trade. The change is mostly due to Xi Jinping killing the idea that China was on some sort of inevitable path to becoming a massive continental version of Singapore.
