"Chinese government hackers have compromised the computers of a Navy contractor, stealing massive amounts of highly sensitive data related to undersea warfare — including secret plans to develop a supersonic anti-ship missile for use on U.S. submarines by 2020, according to American officials.

Taken were 614 gigabytes of material relating to a closely held project known as Sea Dragon, as well as signals and sensor data, submarine radio room information relating to cryptographic systems, and the Navy submarine development unit’s electronic warfare library.

The data stolen was of a highly sensitive nature despite being housed on the contractor’s unclassified network. The officials said the material, when aggregated, could be considered classified, a fact that raises concerns about the Navy’s ability to oversee contractors tasked with developing cutting-edge weapons.

The breach is part of China’s long-running effort to blunt the U.S. advantage in military technology and become the preeminent power in east Asia. The news comes as the Trump administration is seeking to secure Beijing’s support in persuading North Korea to give up nuclear weapons, even as tensions persist between the United States and China over trade and defense matters."

When exactly will the US get tough with China?

When is the federal government going to actually enforce its own edicts? NIST SP 800-171 was supposed to be the law of network cybersecurity effective Jan 1, 2018. DFARS specifically was designed for DOD contractors. Hell, the D is for Defense! Before that, federal contractors were supposed be compliant with NIST SP 800-53 Rev4, but no one actually enforced that either. This is the whole problem with the massive federal government! They have so many agencies and their hands in so many different things that everything gets half-assed attention. The federal government needs to quit doing about half the things they currently "do" and actually do the other half well. Figure out what's really important, and then do that well.

To the OP: China has been doing this shit forever. The Mandiant Report was developed by what turned into the company FireEye. After they put it together (which is a beautiful and condemning report, btw, definitely worth a read by anyone), President Obama correctly sat down with the Chinese and said something to the effect of, "Cut this out. Espionage between governments is one thing, but you guys are using your military to target companies, steal trade secrets and proprietary information, and then giving that information to your companies to give them competitive advantages. Knock it off." They never did. China has hacked trillions of dollars worth of trade secrets, including Lockheed Martin's F-35 development. They has used proprietary information to undercut the proposals of other companies, resulting in them winning a multi-billion dollar oil pipeline in Australia. This shit is out of control. I have no sympathy for whenever anything bad happens to the Chinese. Fuck 'em.

When Trump family stop enriching themselves on Chinese money.

This problem has existed since the Bush Jr years when computers became commonplace in the federal work space. This is a nonpartisan issue. Red/blue politics have no place in this.

But Trump is stupid for addressing China as a threat!!!

Well if we really wanted to kick this thread into high gear we could talk about Operation Talpiot. But as far as tech transfer to China that is a deep, wide and fast-flowing river.

When Trump family stop enriching themselves on Chinese money.

His corruption is something his followers will never believe. He can do no wrong in their eyes.

Trump grandstands in public, but it should be obvious by now that he only cares about his family's money. That Indonesian Hotel deal with the Chinese government is so corrupt.

China supported NK with their counterfeit US dollars operation. China continues to skirt sanctions with the coal trains from NK. China continually hacks the US and yet there are only mild consequences!

The Trump ZTE deal is garbage. It helps China and hurts the US in the long run.

A real leader would be punishing China by slashing the debt. China holds about 10% of it?

LOL all those quadrillions shoveled at the Pentagon and they cant even keep their top-secret data from being hacked.

Can't wait till Bernie takes over and they totally run health care and do away with the free market all together.

It's working to a degree but Bernie and his babes want to tax the shite out of me so no thanks. It would grind everything I'm involved with to a halt.

Trumps ZTE deal helps China? Can you give a summary?

I dont know much details of the new ZTE deal.

This. Even if you explained the reasons we're vulnerable to Trump, he wouldn't understand them let alone come up with a viable solution.

China has pretty much fucked us from behind while we've been too busy using our technology to snapchat pics of us saying out thoughts in hashtags like fucking retards. At this point any appropriate response would essentially be the start of a war so I can't even pretend to know the answer, but they done fucked us goooooood.

It's a shame everything is put on computers these days, everything is available to be hacked.
When we finally face China in combat they will shut our equipment down.

But Trump is stupid for addressing China as a threat!!!

Uh cutting deals that are detrimental to America after receiving payments? You really need to learn more.

He is treating Canada as a threat, though.

He did well to block the attempted foreign purchase of Lattice Semiconductor Corp. by a Chinese state-backed equity firm and especially in regards Broadcom's aggressive bids for Qualcomm earlier in the year but the ZTE issue is a massive fucking stink that Congress actually needs to step in and bring to a halt.

"What happened today amounts to a slap on the wrist," he added. "There is strong bipartisan opposition to letting them off the hook."

Warner, who was in the telecom industry for 20 years and co-founded the company that became Nextel, said the FBI, CIA and NSA all have said in public testimony that the U.S. should not buy ZTE's equipment.

In April, the Commerce Department banned U.S. companies (Ed: predominantly semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm) from selling components to ZTE, which makes smartphones and telecommunications networking gear, after it determined the company violated U.S trade sanctions against North Korea and Iran. ZTE said the ban was unfair and threatened its survival, according to a Reuters report that month.

However, Warner said there is a larger issue at stake. "The truth is ZTE is a national security risk. We have to decide whether we're going to protect our intellectual property," Warner noted, which China has been accused of stealing.

And while Ross said the U.S. is "literally embedding a compliance department of our choosing" to monitor the company, Warner doesn't think it will be able to get to the root of the problem.

"The notion that ZTE is going to adequately redesign all its equipment so that the Chinese government doesn't have access to the back doors that our intelligence community has identified — I didn't see any of that in this agreement," he said. "And candidly I'm not sure the Commerce Department has that level of expertise."

Warner wants to declassify information pertaining to ZTE so he and others can do a better job of getting their message out.
