A bit extreme but I understand the frustration. A lot of people want to see something happen.

The problem is countries are usually immune from lawsuits. There are a couple of exceptions (28 US Code § 1605. General exceptions to the juridictional immunity of a foreign state) but they don't really work here.

Maybe a great lawyer could argue a case at the International Court of Justice in the Hague. He or she would need to prove that China violated its international treaty obligations, but it'd be very difficult. I know that "the right to health" and international environmental agreements exist but it's a kind of trial you'd only see on TV (Boston Legal or Suits maybe).

Even if the international medical community relies on transparency the Chinese do seem untouchable from a legal point of view. People normally don't sue a foreign government.

The best solution would be a fine but it's difficult to justify a reasonable amount without a fair trial. I'm not optimistic.

Let's see how the class-action lawsuit in Florida pans out though.

The way to get back at China is is pressure our respective government and corporations to move manufacturing elsewhere. Some manufacturing has already left China, because their labor rate has risen.

It is clear that China has breached a series of international treaties and therefore should be liable for compensation.

You are underestimating the number of people that will want to hold China legally and morally accountable for its dishonesty and I can't blame them for that. Most European leaders did not assess the lethality of COVID-19 in January correctly because Chinese officials had lied about the situation in Wuhan. It's enough to make a case at the Permanent Court of Arbitration.

The world is not going to turn a blind eye when this shitstorm is over. My prediction is that Trump & Boris Johnson will try to punish China in some way as soon as September/October
