China is reportedly moving missile defense batteries and troops closer to its border with North Korea, a potential sign that Beijing anticipates either a large refugee wave north or a military disturbance triggered by the belligerence of communist dictator Kim Jong-un.

The South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo cited Radio Free Asia (RFA) in a report Monday, stating that RFA had compiled evidence that China had “late last year deployed another missile defense battery at an armored division in Helong, west of Longjing in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture.”

The “North Korean source in China” speaking to RFA also noted that Pyongyang had observed the movement of 300,000 troops closer to the North Korean border and “missile defense batteries near North Korean reservoirs by the Apnok and Duman rivers.” The batteries would prevent the violent outpouring of those reservoirs into China in the event of an airstrike.

On Friday, China’s state-run People’s Daily newspaper reported that Beijing was also investing in establishing nuclear monitoring stations throughout the world, but especially near North Korea, to more rapidly gather information about a potential airstrike. While carefully noting that “detection is not targeted at any particular country,” the newspaper noted that the planned 11 nuclear monitoring stations “are responsible for detecting nuclear activities in neighboring countries, including North Korea.”

In December, Chosun Ilboreported that China is not only using its military assets to prepare for a potential catastrophe in North Korea; the newspaper cited Japanese media that had revealed evidence of China’s building massive refugee camps near the North Korean border, some that could welcome up to half-a-million refugees. Officials reportedly ordered the construction of such camps in Jilin, the same city where state media published a citizens’ guide to surviving a nuclear war triggered by North Korea.

I under understand the moving of troops and construction of refugee camps near the border, but the missle defense system?

Smells like China would side with NK to me but I'm not the most well versed in this shit.

I don't believe they're stupid enough to side with nk. The Chinese government is very pragmatic. What do they have to gain?

Either they side with us, aid in taking out kim. The world order stays in place. They all continue to grow in wealth and power.

Or

They side with nk. They attempt to nuke the U.S. in a war once hostilities break out. Most of their country gets erased. World order is shattered.

Why. Why would they do That? If anything I think they want nk to think theyre on their side for as long as possible and at the right moment they're going to give em the red wedding treatment

IDK, I just know historically speaking generally China ends up on the NK side of things... while at the same time shipping people that have ran away from NK back to NK.

China doesn't want NK having anything happen to it. As far as they're concerned, NK acts as a destabilising facet of the region that's already opposed to the U.S.
Interferes with us and out allies while more or less keeping their hands clean.

Yeah I believe it's because historically they've needed allies in the region. At this stage though I don't think that's the case. China has everything to lose and nothing to gain by siding with NK. They don't need them for anything.

If that were the case wouldn’t they be the moving missile defenses INTO North Korea?

They’re waiting for Best Korea’s greatest athletes and warriors to travel south for the Olympics before launching their assault. Smart.

Its preparation for instability in any form. If that government falls, due to internal or external factors, refugees will flood the border, and you'd have a nuclear armed nation with a huge power vacuum.

Good, let ruthless China deal with them.

Lil' Kim bout to be makin' those 'go fund me' type videos on YouTube begging for our intervention n shit.

You may be right, but not many expected China to intervene in the Korean War. MacArthur famously foolishly assured Truman the Chinese would not intervene.

We can intervene.

My take is the missile defense system would be used to prevent NK from destroying two dams that would flood a large area of Northern China. My assumption is that the Chinese would enter into NK and secure the dams and move in the missile defense systems.

Fuck that. Let China have them, we keep SK, they get NK. Seems fine to me.
I'd rather SK get NK. You know, similar languages, families have been split can now re-unite and shit.

That won't happen tho because it's less communism and it'll piss China off.

In a perfect world, I agree with you. But this ain't that world.
