The US went toe to toe with the Soviets over the Cuban missiles. No reason why the US can't make it clear they will defend Taiwan if China invades. The point is to not bluff, but make it clear America will fight. So China has to decide either face total annihilation and see Taiwan destroyed or give up on trying to invade it.
