Charles should be appreciated more

He fought a safe fight.
If he fights backwards he eats a lot of punches and is 50% the fighter he is when he fights forward.
He has no choice.
That's why Islam will beat him easily. He can't pressure Islam. Islam will take him down and control the pace of the fight.

5 rounds is a long time for Islam to protect his shaky chin while fending off submission attempts. Hopefully for Islam he can keep the fight grounded for as long as possible

He did not fight a safe fight against Gaethje or Poitier for that matter. Against highly dangerous and skilled competition, Charles put on entertaining fights and won

Some guys like Adesanya have fought with a lot less urgency after becoming champ

Whats wild is, if he had made weight he would literally be the GOAT or close to tied with Khabib in a lot of eyes.

Personally I love him, always exciting and literally amazing BJJ and HEAVY hands..... Fucking bad ass dude.

Charles has a huge challenge ahead of him, he's destroyed the old guard (Poirier, Chandler, Gaethje and Ferguson) and there's a couple left of the current guard (namely Islam but also Beneil) and then there's a wave of new lions soon to be in the title picture. Tsarukyan vs Gamrot, whoever wins that is a couple fights away from a title shot at most and they're both super well rounded, athletic and primed fighters. Guram is an enormous LW with good physical strength and trains with Khamzat in Sweden so hopefully his wrestling is sharpening more and more, his striking is beautiful probably the best kicks in the division with a TKD and Muay Thai backrgound and he has a split decision win over Gamrot, this guys being overlooked, he's facing Kazakh prospect Damir Ismagulov who's 23-1 (4-0 UFC). Last of course is Fiziev very athletic, in his prime, elite striker and his next outing is vs RDA, if he wins that he's also in the title picture.

The title isn't safe right, there's a wave of eastern block killers washing over the LW division which has been old and recycled for years now. Charles is amazing, a typhoon of offense and technical brilliance. I am excited to see how it all plays out.

If only he'd get his weight issues under control.

You sir, ought to be ashamed of yourself to even say that. Out of 13 fights, he has a combined weight of being over at .5 pounds. Maybe you're trolling.

I find him entertaining as hell (inside the cage).

I think Islam beats him but I'll probably be rooting for him.

I don't like how he's been chasing the Conor/Nate fight though and is making excuses not to fight Islam. I get that he wants the money fight and anyone would, but he shouldn't be trying to say Islam needs to earn something when he's chasing fights with guys who haven't won in years.

I appreciate it as a just bleed fan, but I will comment on the style as a semi-informed Sherbo as well.
The man is gonna get KO'd sooner or later fighting like that.
Honestly, I find more enjoyment when there is a fine balance between fight IQ and entertainment.
I would be ok if he dialed it back just a tad and played to his strengths just a wee bit more.

Charles is not the same fighter anymore after he had Islam on top of him.
Don't be surprised if Islam fakes a takedown and throws a high kick.

Adesanya is a counter-striker. He didn't change after becoming champ. The level of caution of his opponents did.

You seem to be forgetting how much shit that he got for how he fought against Anderson.

His exciting performances before he was champ were all down to the opponents who gave him openings. Whittaker tried to KO him in their first fight. In their rematch, he fought a tactical battle using his takedowns to disrupt Adesanya's rhythm.

That said, Oliveira deserves a ton of credit. I've saying since he beat Chandler that he's the most dangerous offensive fight in the history of the sport.

I don't know anyone putting down Oliveira's fighting style other than his issues with making the weight - literally the only knock on the guy you can have.

I have no shame at all and sorry but I'm not lenient when fighters have missed weight 5 times already. If it was his first time it would be different but it wasn't and I'm sure he'll miss weight once more before he calls it a career. You want to keep buying his BS, right on.

Charles is a true mma fighter that fights with fire and balls. These are the guys who are elite and deserve all the respect from the fans and media for their approach to fighting. And I say they because there are more guys like Charles that put it all on the line. Unlike others who bitch and moan about not getting title shots cause they fight safe and without any balls.

I think he is already appreciated. The guy is fun to watch. It isn't often that we have a fighter who can do striking well and submissions well. I love that capability.

Most of the problem right now is the stretching of truths for fans of fighters to get their guy into the belt fight. It is fan trash talking in action. lol.

In the long term here is whats unfortunate. If he wins the belt again this fall, the division is almost already cleaned out. There is Islam and Dariush as only top fighters in his path right now. If he beats them defense fights will have to be reruns until one of these guys can start making waves.

Rafael Fiziev
Arman Tsarukyan
Mateusz Gamrot
Brad Riddell
Damir Ismagulov
Guram Kutateladze

EDIT* Oops - Missed Gillespie in this list since he is new to the Top 10.
EDIT2* I missed Mark O. Madsen in my list
