Chael got a full mount and, instead of sitting on Silva's belly and posturing up to get powerful shots distance and balance, he chooses to hang on Silva's legs like a monkey on tree branches for 50 seconds doing no damage and spending tremendous energy to keep the abdomen erect. Maybe he thought Anderson could be smacked and fractured by a 200 pounds weight...
Its not that easy, especially on an opponent like Silva. He didn't want to risk losing such a dominant position.
You're right. He should've postured up so that Anderson would have a chance to retaliate with elbows or punches from his back. I rewatched the fight recently, thought the same thing as you, then realized chael was just playing it smart. Had he postured up, he could've lost the position, been reversed, or even been caught in a sub again. Chael realized he couldn't put Anderson away with typical GnP and probably was moving to try to sub him.
I think Rampage described what type of fighter he is pretty spot on in my opinion. When you fight him you're afraid of losing, but you're not afraid of getting hurt.
First round, Chael was making anderson feel his weight. Over the course of a fight the plan would be to exhaust Anderson and steadily inflict more damage.
here are news for you: the bell also makes you lose position. you guys are making me believe Anderson is more dangerous full mounted late in the round than on foot in the beggining of the next
Chael has great skill great wrestler but from what I've seen his GNP isn't vicious enough to majorly hurt or ko opponents. He can beat many great fighters but it doesn't necessarily make an entertaining fight.
This, we know how good Andersons chin is. Chael had great success the first time round, he was likely taking his time, trying to frustrate Anderson while not wearing himself out.
because everyone is afraid of losing the position when it will happen either way 50 seconds later. you don't achieve anything laying on Anderson in a round which is already 10-8, unless he was stupid like Brian Stann to get choked. There wasn't space to a armlock also. Anyone can be TKOed in a full mount
Chael knew he would not finish Spider with his ground and pound. He had about 20 minutes to do so in his first fight (when he had Overeem-like levels of testosterone to boot), so he knew it just won't work. But by staying in full mount he: - made sure he wins round 10-8 by having a dominant position for an extended period of time; - losing on points would make Spider anxious in later rounds, so it would be easier for him to make a mistake for Chael to capitalize on; - maintaining this position Chael denied Spider any chance of locking a submission; - mounted Spider can't effectively strike Chael with elbows from his back (and in the first fight Chael looked really busted up after elbows he took). So I think this gameplan actually looked very good for Sonnen.
We also have to remember that Sonnen had remarkable success in the first fight standing up. Of course we know every round starts standing up, and Silva is extremely deadly there. In the first fight that didn't stop Sonnen taking him down.. I imagine Sonnen felt the same thing could happen, without the mistake in the 5th.
It's been attempted. You have to pick your spots with Silva and Silva didn't let Sonnen get in position to drop bombs.
