People who haven't wrestled don't understand the nuances of the sport. It involves so much more than takedowns. This place is obsessed with takedowns and TDD = wrestling. In their second fight kos got up at absolute will against GSP. Hendricks did too. Fucking Carlos Condit, an atrocious wrestler, hit a switch on GSP picture perfect. GSP has likewise struggled when he's on his back. He laid there both times until the round ended when Josh was on him. Even Thiago Alves held him down. GSP has never shown top level wrestling on the mat, ever. Watch Ben Askren. The way he scrambles, gets off his back, wrist control, riding ability, his sprawl control, etc are leagues above GSP.

And Ben Askren? The guy who had to eyepoke Luis Santos because Santos was out grappling him with ease?


When judging the best in any mma category you should also look at the competition level. Askren struggled with Jay Hieron. GSP destroyed him.

Askren fights very very low level competition. Sorry.

As a life long wrestler, I'm most impressed by Jon jones wresting. He has more variety than Georges. Georges has a ridiculously good shot but jones has a whole arsenal it's liek comparing a Muay thai striker to Dan Henderson. Hendersons got one weapon that's arguably the best in the history of the sport, but you wouldn't say he's the best striker

GSP isn't the best wrestler ever in MMA

either he has the best wrestling or he doesn't

But having the best "pure" wrestling is not the same thing as having the best MMA wrestling. The same way being the best striker in the world doesn't mean that you automatically will have the best MMA striking. You have to adapt any "pure" style to fit MMA, and when you do that it changes.
