The most impressive CGI in Game of Thrones wasn't dragons or giants, it was the backgrounds and settings. The problem is Hollywood relies too much on it and makes it the focal point when the technology isn't there yet. It can be an amazing tool when used sparingly. The problem is CGI works best when you use real practical effects then fill in the background or details with CGI.
A good example of bad CGI would be Captain Marvel where they literally CGId her face while she was falling. It was so out of place you can't help but go "oh that don't look right"
Compare the newest Freddy Kreuger to the old one. The iconic wall bulge scene worked so well because it was real (sort of) . They used latex or something to get the effect. In the newer one the CGI was lacking.
Right.. Maybe if GOT spent less money on dragon scenes explosions and fire they could have afforded better writers for the last few seasons. The most impressive CGI in Game of Thrones wasn't dragons or giants, it was the backgrounds and settings. CGI is better than ever, and so is prop making. The problem is chucky's new face approaches the uncanny valley. Your brain is telling you its a shitty cgi person and not a doll.
The second problem is no one needed a chucky remake.
I'm sorry but I just can't take Aubrey Plaza in a serious role, Parks and Recs ruined that for me. However, I am willing to give this movie a shot and I think the trick is to go into the theater with zero expectations.
I very much doubt they'll ever overcome the uncanny valley.CGI has made incredible advances in the last decade, but it has to be used properly with the right background. Lots of progress on CGI porn too, so I hear.
CGI was used with great effect in the lotr trilogy but it also had a ton of practical effects and care of the product thrown in. When Peter Jackson didnt really even wanna do the hobbit movies he moved to almost all CGI and it looked and was terrible.
Special effects aren't special anymore.
Practical effects are the shit, yo
