Cejudo Ruined his Career By Retiring in his Prime

Dude is 37 now. his last few fights before he retired he was so ferocious the way he destroyed dominik cruz, dillashaw and moraes. dude fumbled the bag bigly by wasting his prime on social media.
Agreed. He overestimated his value outside fighting and squandered his prime. I thought he looked better as the fight went on and I think he might be able to get some quality wins but the big moment for him has passed.

If you were a virgin into your 30’s you would have done all kinds of dumb things to hang out with it 24/7.

Cejudo priced himself out.

He tried to make small fighters popular, but it's hard to do because everyone knows 155 and up would whoop him.

I can't blame him for trying, but Dana and the UFC called his bluff.

The inactivity hurt him, but at the same time, he's always been beatable.

Yes. He also should have stuck with the lighter weight.

Henry looked weird in this last fight; almost like a legit dwarf. Oversized head, weird body.

I think he should've stayed at his best weight, the division below. He would still beat most (or all) of the Flyweights today.

I mean honestly can't judge him on this decision looking from afar. Has a family and his own business. A lot of reasons to take a break/walk away from the sport that I guess some people on here can't understand

Very true, but I think more than anything he simply needed the time off. He grew up wrestling and spent his whole life in a gym, I think I remember him talking about that and how he needed to just chill and live a somewhat normal life for a while.

One of the worst business decision a fighter has ever made.

He expounded upon this in his videos. He grew bored with the sport, and combat sports in general. Wanted to build a family. His retirement was really only for two years anyway since he’s been in the testing pool since last spring.

Meh. I don't think it's fair to say he "ruined his career". Cejudo had an unbelievable 2 year run where he won 2 belts, defended them both, and beat the consensus greatest FLW of all-time and consensus two greatest BW's of all-time in the process. That's about as good of a 4-fight run as anyone can possibly have. He accomplished everything.

You can say he retired in his prime, and that's seemingly true... but also he was 33 years old when he beat Cruz, and had a lifetime of high-level athletic competition under his belt. That's the age when most BW's start to decline anyways... so you could make the argument that he walked away at the perfect time. It was a valiant effort coming back at 36 to take another shot at the belt, and he very nearly pulled it off.... but regardless, he had a fantastic career and his name will live on in the history books.

Dudes been competing since he was a teenager who else was left to beat at the time ?

He beat all the big names and to lose to a relatively unknown like Yan for example would take away from his legacy.

I agree he was probably bluffing but since when did 125s have any pull?

Similar problem to Francis. He over estimated his worth to the UFC

I kind of think Henry would have likely lost within 1-2 fights if he tried to stick around and defend the belt anyway. Either to Yan or Aljo.

He's not in a terrible spot now though. I think him vs Merab later this year could get him another title fight. If he loses just retire again with some more money or if he wins both retire at 38 as champ

Basically he will be relevant longer

Cejudos grappling is overrated. Anytime a fighter has to let his opponent up, rather than challenge on the ground, is a big flaw.

yeah he's stupid for that. If he thought he could retire at that point and be viewed as the best, He messed up. He could have just fought yan or Aljo and won after cruz. Who knows? he may have easily cemented himself as one of the lower weight class goats with aldo and mighty mouse.

I mean the dude had a three year lay off, and showed up against a champ, fought a fight in which many people thought he won, including the opponent's home town crowd. i find it very hard to say that he ruined his career, when he had a showing like this. he looked good, the fight could have gone his way and then everyone would have been saying the exact opposite. he's an olympic gold medal wrestler, let's give it a few more fights before we say it's all doom and gloom. he looked good IMO.

lol
that’s how the 125ers look. Mighty Mouse. Cejudo Benavidez. They all have these massive skulls tiny bodies and hands. It’s creepy.
